All About Pocket Knives

after cleaning my knives i pulled this one out . i do not think its legit. very old company american shear and knife company. i would think the liners and pins would be steel. handle material looks like it was cut short and not shrinkage......thanks in advance for your thoughts..........

American Shear & Knife Co; c. 1853-1914- per Goins.

Just ‘reading’ what I can see of the knife; the design, style, machining, everything I can see of that knife says it is MUCH newer than 97 years ago. A good 50 years newer or more.

Did someone recycle the name? That is a possibility.

Schrade did a commemorative NYK knife, but they had owned the name for years.

Maybe someone at AAPK knows.

thanks Dale, looks modern to me ... last night i found Paperwork ! bought it from someone thats always on the counterfeit list i guess i found my own answer.

hey paul, you do not own the patent on being duped by counterfieters. we all have done that one time or another. it still must be a nice knife if you bought it. hope it wasn't for too much.

I am fairly sure that Jim Parker had knives made with that brand name, I think they were made in Germany at the Olbertz factory. I believe I used to own one that had all of the characteristics of a newer German Bulldog. Not saying that's what yours is, just thinking that I had seen a few knives with that brand name that were certainly newer knives.

I would agree that it was not a product of the American Shear & Knife Co but more likely a reproduction.The way the awl is constructed is a bit unusual;that might be a way to discover the maker.

The scales are very similar to a United Boker one armed man's knife I bought in the 1980's and they are deteriorating.The knife in question seems to be of pretty good quality so I wouldn't consider it a total loss.

Assuming that it is a Utica punch blade, it may be one of the many knives that were made up out of old Utica parts that came from the Utica factory in the 80's - many of these blades were restamped with other old logos and parts assembled into knives.

ALL of those parts( 2-semi trailed loads) were bought by one person in Louisville, KY. That's why so many fakes are attributed to the Blue Grass State.
