Afraid I'm going to pass on that one .... bet it was really nice at one time !!!

It would make a good user with a some new scales on it and some TLC.

I had one just like that and it did the same thing. The scales just absolutely disintegrated in days! I peeled them off before much damage was done to the metal parts.

Mine is an XX USA model and here it is today: It's one I rehandled myself out of Montana Mule Deer stag, and was once my favorite EDC. It since has been replaced by GEC 73's with the single blade, as I'm still waiting for them to make a 73 with drop point master and secondary pen. The 73 frame is about 1/2 inch shorter and the blades are the same length.

Barry, thats a really nice job on that case. She looks better now than the original. Do you do any handle repairs/replacements for other people?

I rehandled a Case stockman a couple years ago for a customer. When I got the handles off I noticed a crack in the brass liner on both liners bear the rocker pin. The liners ended broken in two before I got the knife apart. He bought it for his son and kept it in a box for his him. It caused some damage to the other knives, but I don’t think it had been there too long.

To make the repair I had to get another knife with bad blades and swap frames then I put bone handles on the repaired knife.
You never know what you are getting when you buy a knife with off gassing celluloid.
I haven’t seen one yet fixed by a simple cleaning!

You're right, Dale. I've seen where the frame is cracked like that too. By then all you have left is the steel, if anything. Yikes! Celluloid is scary!!!

Bob, I leave the difficult rehandles to the pro's, but I will rehandle fixed blade knives with full tangs occasionally. There are a couple rehandled Schrades in my store right now. Check 'em out!

I've cleaned and soldered small cracks as long as the rest of the liner was still strong enough. I've also had them crack in two like Dale mentioned and had to replace the frame like he did. I just pulled the Goldstone handles from a 1992 Winchester Fishtail single blade from my own collection. I noticed a hint of green starting on top of the white liner underneath and the shield was starting to corrode. In short, I caught it in time. Sneaky stuff, that celluloid!

I had an Ulster fish knife that I tried to solder, but is was just too thin to be able to use it.
I had to find another donor knife.

The decomposing scales didn't hurt the blades but they were sure working on the liners.
