All About Pocket Knives

Hard times are about, and I"m thinking of thinning my collection to help get my buisness going (licences and such). But the big problem is what do I part with? I have 200+ knives that were hand picked to be part of what really makes me happy. Going through them, each one means something to me. The ones that don't, have little value anyway. How can a man put on blinders and just sell, sell sell? I've sold knives before, and I still think about them. Will there ever be another like it? I'm sure some of you have done this very thing. How do you come to grips with it?

I don't know what to tell ya Woodrat. For those of us who have an emotional attachment to our possessions, selling something is like parting with a child but if you need the $$$, I guess the only thing you can do is hitch up your britches, put your teeth in and do it. (sad music plays here)

If your business plan is good, just promise yourself to replace each one you sell with
two better ones when the business is going good. I know each of your knives has a
memory or story with it, but the replacement knives will too. Take photos of each one
you sell and you will always be able to remember it and think of how you aquired it.
Then, hopefully, your new business phone will ring - with a personal call about a knife, LOL.
Most success starts out as some form of sacrifice.

Man, Woodrat, I feel your pain. I've been collecting for over 40 years and have never sold the first knife.
So many of mine have stories and memories. To let go of any of them would be very hard.
Maybe I should be on that "hoarder" TV show.

Look at your collection overall. See if you can identify a subgroup that might constitute a particular cutlery theme.

If you find one or more, decide which might interest you most and which might be the most interesting and exciting to actively pursue and expand upon at some future date. Isolate those knives out, then sell the rest.

When better times come around again, begin your efforts to expand that group of knives into a respectable more focused collection.

Thanks for all the advice- Much appreciated. Funny how you chimed in there Charlie, because the first knife I had on the block was a Beautiful 1994 Robeson Shuredge 622751. It's been sitting by the computer for a month now.

once you let those first few go it gets easier..sometimes a man has to do what he has to do..have fun selling them it can be quite enjoyable to..are you going to sell on ebay??

My children do not have the feel for my knives like I do, and I suspect when they sell them they(the knives) will not get the respect that I think they should have(price and history). I find myself worrying about it for some reason. If you can disperse your knives on your terms, you have an "Ace in the Hole" and can feel good about it and do them justice. Just keep some EDC's and forge on.

start out with 2 piles, one that you will not part with no matter what, and another pile of what might be possible to sell.

Put your keeper pile away.

Out of the possibles pile, pick out what is "hot" right now and bringing good prices then sort out another pile of less valuable. Look at the knives u know you will never get again or are very unlikely to be able to rebuy and evaluate if you could live without them. If you cannot live without them or would really miss them, put them into your keeper pile. If there is a good - decent chance you can rebuy the knife or one like it at another point in time, sell those knives.

That's what I would do. Or pick out your least favorite 25 knives and sell those. Knives that are replaceable are expendable. Knives that have greater sentimental value than monetary value are a no brainer to keep.

If you selling pile doesn't net you enough money, go back to the drawing board and do it all over again.

Thanks again guys. Yes Miked, I will be selling on fleabay. It's just the easist way to go for me despite the fees. Time, I guess to bust'em out and make some choices. You guys are the best and have really helped a brother out. Much appreciation to all.
