Need help to identify foreign dagger

I've had this old dagger around for a long time and have not been able to identify what country it's from. It has a 9" blade and a 4 1/2" handle. Except for the blade and handle, everything is brass. In one of the pictures, you can see a rectangular hole where the dagger locked into a scabbard [just a guess]. The only identifing mark looks like a capital E over a V. Does anyone have any information or guesses on the dagger? Thanks, Al

it looks like a japanese dirk...but the chinese did forge this model. close ups of the handle and guard would help.
it is worth more with the scabbard and knots...
