All About Pocket Knives

I have some leather and intend to make a couple of strops. I'll probably glue it to some scrap maple to make a paddle strop. What would be the best type of glue to use? Would contact cement be ok?

I'll use jewelers rouge or Flitz to charge one of the strops. Do I need to clean the compound off the strop after use, and if so how?

Any other tips would be appreciated.

I did a search and didn't really see anything addressing this particular question.

I find white carpenters glue (Elmers or similar) is great for porous/porous bonds. I found a nice you tube video on making a strop board and the woman (former book binder) suggested this too. Use a brush to spread it out and let it dry up under some sort of pressure.

I use semichrome on a leather strop. I leave it on and let it dry out after each use and then reactivate it with Rem oil. This has kept the leather from hardening as well. Works for me

also, you will not need to clean the strop after each use. Just add a little more compound as needed and you should be good to go.

A friend of mine who does leather work made me one from horse-hide. He said something about horse hide having natural oils and not to use anything on it. So far, it seems that he was right.
