Am I the only one who finds this sort of thing troubling?

i dont find it troubling,i see it as a tool for collectors,now if they would release an app for your ipod you could veryify its legitimacy right on the sellers table b4 you purchase it,i think its great and all high end knives should do something similar

At the risk of having this turn political I agree with Phil; I find it VERY troubling.I'm still trying to figure out how to disable the GPS feature in my cel phone.

Anything that allows someone else to track me or my property with our without my knowledge or consent is a bit troubling to me. It's an invasion of privacy at best and could lend itself to abuse as well.

Because it sets a dangerous(to me anyway)precedent.It opens the door for anyone to abuse the idea.This is probably going to get deleted but what the h***:

ID chips first became popular as a means for keeping track of animals(mostly cats and dogs)in case they became detached from their owners.This is a good idea in my opinion as most animals(the four footed variety anyway)are incapable of communicating their locations accurately.And an important thing to note here(as Phil intimated)this was done with the full knowledge and consent of the owner.

It seems to me I recall awhile back that there was a move afoot to implement a similar policy with small children to aid in recovering them should they become lost or abducted. Again probably a well intentioned but(to me anyway)a very misguided idea for the same reason stated above:It sets a dangerous precedent.

I would liken it to the carving of the letter A into the forehead of early settlers of this country in New England to proclaim the presence of an adulterer(or adulteress) or the tattooing of members of the Jewish faith in 1930's Germany. Think I'm being paranoid? Maybe.

If you are a firearms owner do you object to registration of gun owners(notice I said owners and not firearms)or the marking of ammunition to trace it's origins? The latter was never intended to trace ammunition but rather is a back door attempt to compile a list of gun owners.Sorry;my paranoia is showing through again.

I am not going to get into the political implications of this but trust me they are myriad. Feel free to read this until it gets yanked.

I see no reason to pull that post K7K. There's no good reason why a simple serial number on the blade would not suffice.

im hoping that anyone here who didnt like the chip in the knife is not driving any vehichle made by gm,as gm and onstar reported yesterday that whether u subscribe to onstar or not they are tracking you and selling the info to law enforcement, ,credit card companies and bill collectors to name a few

chautauqua, Not only Onstar vehicles can be tracked. Due to computers in all vehicles, any vehicle can be tracked.

if it were only a knife, no problem.

but, smart phones, cameras, automobiles...bet your television tells homeland security what you are watching.

Y'all have heard me whine about this a number of times. Illinois is now the only state without a concealed carry law. In addition, if you have an objection to registering gun owners, do not move here. In order to purchase and own a firearm in Illinois, you must have a FOID card (Firearms Owners Identification card). You heard me correctly. In Illinois, firearms are not registered, firearms owners are registered. Not supposed to own a firearm without the FOID, can't buy a firearm without the FOID, can't purchase ammunition without the FOID and I'm not sure about this one but you may not be able to get a resident hunting license without the FOID.

I didn't vote for it. Oh wait! I didn't get a chance to vote for it. It was passed without a vote.


On the original subject, I have no objection to putting an identifying chip in a high end knife such as a Randall. In my mind it does nothing more than validate the knife's authenticity. The article doesn't say anything about the transponder having GPS capabilities or anything other than an electronic copy of the serial number that's etched on the knife. You're welcome to your opinion, this has been mine.

For me..,even IF I could afford one...I wouldn't buy one just for that reason.
