You've forced me to drag them from their rest Dimitri.

I refer to them as the old soldiers. Some of them just need a proper sharpening to remove grinding wheel sharpening sessions and some need the results of pry bar work fixed once I get a set of tapered miniature leveling rollers built. Most are however in need of major overhaul which I intend to be my retirement hobby when I can't afford to buy knives any more. I also took a picture of the antique tobacco tin I keep them in. Another flea market find like most of its inhabitants.

Nice bunch of old knives you got there

I was buying them to do the same thing, fix them up someday, most likely that will never happen. I just like looking at and studying them

I've even had stamps made by the last man in Sheffield that is still doing them by hand. I'll try and post a picture of it tomorrow. I think its clever hopefully you will too. It's for any that I rebuild. I'll have to get another done for originals by me if I ever get that far.

Really great old knives MB. I have to grit my teeth oftentimes to keep from collecting some of these great old patterns and stamps (not always sucessfully) otherwise I'd spend all of my money on them and have nothing left to indulge my other collecting interests.

Dimitri - MY fault???!


Here is an old Robeson Shuredge with excellent bone handles.
The blades are pitted but still take a razor edge.
I have been carrying this for about as month.
It fits nicely in the watch pocket of my jeans.
That small blade is like a scalpel.
It even looks now after a month of use and pocket wear.

These old knives put most modern knives to shame when it comes to beauty, comfort and edge holding.

I got this one out of Coffee Cup's relic pile. It got a new lease on life when Muskrat Man put a good Camillus spear blade in it. All set for another 50 years.

Couple beat-up Case knives--the one missing the back scale went to Colorodo in my tool box in 75-then Ft. Worth-in 76 Houston in 79 from there to Ventura,Ca. in 81 then to Decatuar,Il. in 83 and finnaly back to Michigan in fall of 85 that thing was old and beat up when i got it at a rumage sale in the bottom of a tool box can't believe i never lost it wrenchin on the side of the road er where ever--had it 30+ yrs. now

here is my current favorite plumb worn out knife.

Ha ha ya kinda sounds that way don't it--recession had me out chasing a buck were'nt no work here and back then you had to compete with all the thousands of laid off shop rats

This old, battered and worn Henry Sears is a favorite of mine for two reasons - first, it used to belong to Johnnie Fain, second, it has some of the nicest horn handles I have ever seen.

Here are a few bruised, battered & broken old knives. I kept these because there was something about each of them that I really liked. Maybe it is elegance of design from a bygone era, or the quality still evident in spite of wear and abuse. What ever it is, I still like them and wish I had found them when they were still in good condition.



Old Remington – missing rear handle, a solder patch in the front handle and a broken blade. I may make a single blade EDC out of the clip blade. Old Ulster ebony jack – A pattern I dearly love, with a broken pen blade and a badly misused master blade. Bet it was nice in it’s day! Another battered Ulster – One broken blade and the handles are worn down nearly paper thin! But An old Ulster (top) and a Robeson Shuredge. I love that Ulster cigar whittler, such an elegant shape! The Robeson has celluloid handles and plenty of wear to both blades, BUT, I may have to put some new handles on it, just because it deserves it!

This little beauty is sadly not in the best of condition.

Thanks guys. It is a George Ibberson, Sheffield knife. It really is sweet. Nice milled liners and near perfect blade fit when closed. Must be very careful opening the master blade as nothing is holding the pin and it easily falls apart. Still a pleasure to behold. s-k

Here's an old ELECTRIC CUTLERY with 2 bobbed main blades.

That old Electric Cut has some nice bone on it.
Unfortunately for us collecting today, the people who bought these knives bought them as working tools. They bought them and they used them. When the blade broke, they tried to reprofile it into a shape that they could still use.

Amazing isn’t it that common tools of 50 to 100 years ago are so sought after today as objects of beauty?






It is kind of like collecting old screwdrivers.
If anyone thinks they would like to collect old screwdrivers I have a small bucket full that are about 10 years old.
Get them now and save!
In only 40 years they will be very collectable!
