It's a great looking knife and I'm certainly not going to doubt your knowledge of Case knives, but, if that knife came up on Ebay with that stamp all cattywampus and over-struck, I think the seller would be given the what for. And the knife would be found in the Counterfeit section.

It is a weird looking stamp , but it certainly looks old and untampered with too me.
Its in the Houston Price book on page 156.

Is that "Official Price Guide to Collector Knives" Price and Zalesky? On page 157 they reference a stamp, "W.R. Case & Son Cutlery Company, Little Valley, NY, different than the one on your knife. My main thoughts were towards the WAY it was stamped rather than the stamp itself. Please understand that I am in no way, shape or form and expert, or even have slight knowledge of Case knives. I absolutely believe you when you say it is a very rare stamp. The stamp just looks odd in the way it is laid out.

The stamps in the book are drawn by hand and I doubt if their exact.
But its the stamp I'm going with,,I've never seen this stamp on any knife before,,but on the knife I have.
So I really have nothing to compare it with.

OK, I see that stamp now, pg. 176. But again, it's the way the stamp is applied, all caddywampus and over-struck, that I am referring to. I would have to think that the stamp shown in Price & Zalesky would be how it should look.

Does it have "XX" stamped on the middle of the blade or on the back of the tang? I would think the "Little Valley, NY" would be proportionate in the middle but that's just me.

A suggestion for anyone who's interested in collecting Case knives:

Pfeiffer's book for modern (Case / XX and forward)
Sargent's for older knives
Witcher's book for Case tang stamps

Witcher's book has more photos of Case stamps than any other I have seen. There are so many of them that it's pretty difficult to keep them in your head without serious study.

if you were to superimpose one tang stamp over the other, they look like they would become one, this tells me that no one but the original company put that stamp there. if someone else did that, the stamps would be more zigzagged than they are now and wouldnt be identical. but i also believe any buyer would question those markings. but i too am no expert.

Only Case Bros.had the right to use the XX at the time this knife was made.
And the stamp isnt over-struck,,its just real close. I have alot of old WR'S and Case Bros. ect and the blades themselves are correct as far as shape and grinding,,swedges ect. It really doesnt matter too me,,because it wont be going anywhere but in my safe anyway.

This is not an overstruck stamp. The stamp was designed to look exactly the way it does look, with the "Little Valley" at an angle to the tang. The stamp is shown in Witcher's book on page 138. Witcher gives the years as 1903 - 1905.
