All About Pocket Knives

Was wondering if people could direct my search for a (preferably older) folding hunter made with non-stainless carbon or chrome-vanadium steel?

Essentially, I want to replace my Buck 110 with something made with carbon steel. I'm looking for something about the same size as the 110. Would prefer the classic brass/wood style handle, but would consider jigged handles too. Really insist on a locking blade.

I know that Schrade/Old Timer made locking hunter knives but have no idea what type of blades they used.

I know Case made CV bladed hunters but most of what I've seen are 2 bladed slip joints.

Any ideas?

Schrade made the Old Timer 6OT or the LB7. Very similar to the 110. Make sure you get the pre 2004 USA made model.

You looking for a knife similar in shape and function to the 110?

Schrade made a 7OT that is damn close to the 110 in size. The steel in them is some hard stuff.

Just verifying, are the three Schrades mentioned carbon steel, not stainless?

Many of the Schrade (original Schrade, not the current incarnation of Schrade) 7OTs were non-stainless. You can avoid those marked "Schrade +" and screen out a lot of the stainless knives. Pesonally, I just watch ebay for 7OTs with rust on the blade.

here are 2 great easterns that have excellent 1095 carbon steel. the spiral cut red buffalo did 2 texas whitetail deer & would still scrape arm hair. the primitive bone is still unbloodied, both can be carried in the pocket but i prefer a horizontal belt sheath. the blade is about 3.5 in. long & plenty strong for most game you might encounter. for feral hogs i prefer 4 or 4.5 in. blades.---HiPower

I've got a Kabar 1189 that sounds like what you're describing. See if they are what you had in mind.

I believe you are correct. Schrades ain't my specialty but I remember something about the + sign signifying something. LOL

The suggestion of the 60T and 70T led me to discover the 50T, which will slot in nicely between my 110 (no sense chucking it yet) and my pocket knives. Thrilled to learn more about Schrade, as an Ulster 4 blade camper is one of my all time favorite pocket knives and so there's some continuity of some sort there.

Thanks for the tip on the '+' symbol. That helps immensely.

Also, thanks for the tip on the Kabar folder. That goes on the watch list when the time comes to replace the 110.

Huge thanks for the suggestion of the new Eastern knives. Those are wonderful looking and I'm glad to know somebody in the north east is making knives like that.

Last question (as if)... Was the Buck folding hunter ever made in carbon steel? Or is that a question better suited for the Buck sub-forum?

Oh... Hopefully a 50T is on the way soon. Can't wait.

I've been carrying the same one pictured above since 1972. It went to Nam and came back. Been through three pouches but the knife just keeps on tickin'.

Another option on a locking blade with a carbon blade is opinel, my largest is the #8 but there is larger , these are great slicing knives so great for filliting and cutting meat, also very popular with bushcraft folk. a little different i know but got a great long history and great bang for the bucks,

Did case ever do the hammerhead in carbon or CV blade ?

Of course I've never seen Sasquach either but he showed up in the chat room recently, so draw your own conclusions.

W, just found the 110 timeline in the Buck forum and it appears that it's always been some form stainless. I got mine in '78 as a kid. Ordered it from the Herter's Catalog. You're right about the general durability and thinking about that freed me up to think about the smaller 50T. Hopefully the smaller 50T will get more everyday use.

zed6309, thumbs up on the Opinel #8. I picked up one used several years ago and credit that knife for getting me back in the habit of EDC use. They're so dang light!!!! Just disappears in the pocket. The handle on my was so beat that I sanded it down to clean wood and applied several coats of Tung oil. Great feel now. Much better than before. Anyway, the Opinel is in my 2 knife EDC rotation and for 90% of the time, the simple lock on the Opinel is enough but 10% and especially on weekends when I'm working on the yard or in the barn I have to pay too much attention on it. Same for the slip joint Ulster camper knife (which I love dearly). I really want the security of the Buck 110 with a carbon steel blade, classic looks and, if possible, a bit smaller profile. The Schrade 50T should be on the way soon and we'll see. Hopefully it's my Saturday knife (and the Opinel stays my Sunday go-to-meeting knife).

glad you got something sorted dave and the schrade sounds perfect, ive become a huge fan of opinel since a good friend in the uk sent me one he had going spare, it was a #8 and a favourite in the garden, im getting a #8 in ss for kitchen work, ive now goot 7 opinels and love them all, there easy to sharpen and hold a edge pretty well, as you say there light and disapear in your pocket, i love the virobloc locking sleeve but on my edc i have to go for there #5 with no lock and under 3 inches blooming uk laws, although the way these riots are going a machete might be better well glad your sorted mate, take care
