All About Pocket Knives

Hi,

you guys might find this be a lil' bit silly

In my short period of pocket knife using and accumulating, I found a very interesting phrase, so to speak.
and that phrase is "Oil The Joint". this phrase always stick in my head for some reason, every time some body showing me their slipjoint, I always checked if they oil the joint or not.

But, I never know what would happen if you're not oiling the joint of your knife, until I came across this pic in another forum...it's from an I*XL George Wostenholm Sheffield England knife.

I know that this phrase in stamped in some of the old knife, been trying to get them, but the price always too high for me. so when I see this knife by Joseph rodgers with a very reasonable price, I just had to have it.

beside the Oil the joint stamp, this is a very well made knife, not a vintage, but I have to settle with it for now.

I had a 1950's omw with the oil here written on it, sadly the spine was broke so i gave it to a friend as a gift as i know he could repair it, hi did as now a one layer knife,

sorry falah a spelling mistake i meant one lol , i paid 50p for it at a market and it seemed ok but discovered the spring had a break in it, i forget the date but think it was 1953 or 54 ill search for pics,my mate polished it up and turned it into a 1 layer knife, at leasts its brought back to life i like the look of BAK's (british army knives) although pretty heavy in the pocket .

a pic of it repaired i was close 1955

cheers mate, my friend is very happy with it, these dont turn up very often at markets these days so i was surprised to see it, sadly you dont come across many knives at markets in the uk as some times too much hassle as police do wonder around the markets , some people have sighns saying over 18's only, years ago you could pick up axes machettes and allsorts of stuff but not so much these days,

I'm still trying to understand if you couldn't buy a more than 3" pocket knife in UK.
but you can't buy an Axe?

yeah its crazy isnt it uk laws suck, for me the lock blade was such a great invention and improved knives espesially in hunting and working knives, but in the uk a lock blade is classed as a fixed blade knife so ilegal, plus blades have to be under 3inches, although i dont mind that part as most og my favourite knives are under 3inches but i really like my 110 and 112 buck but there hidden at the bottom of my backpack when on camping trips etc,

Reading these posts about "oil the joint" brought back a memory from many years ago that I would like to share. Back in the early '60's when I was a teenager, I got to go deer hunting with a man who later became an uncle by marriage. My wifes' uncle was an ol' time Central Florida cowboy and we hunted deer with deer hounds. The dogs would be released on a fresh track and standers were put out in a spot where ol' buck might run. The uncle mentioned above had an old military jeep(1942 MB,I think) which we would ride to a point along a cypress strand then stop and listen to the dogs running the deer. Quite often it would take the hounds a while to get lined out on a deer and we would just sit and listen, trying to figure where the action would go. Many times Unk would get out, lift the 2 latches and raise the hood of his little jeep. He would then pull the dip stick fom the little 4 banger flat head engine and apply a small drop or two of the engine oil to his Case pocket knifes' hinge pins. Some times things jog our memory to bring back old forgotten memories that were very practical. Unk always said " keep her oiled so she would snap!" If my memory is correct "she" was probably a Case 6375. Treefarmer

Was "oil the joint" mainly a Sheffield stamp? Seems that that is where you normally see it.

I think so, TJ. I do have several German knives with it, but I figure it was a copy cat move as all of them post date the time when Wostenholme supposedly started the fad. S-K posted one that looks like it pre-dates the IXL fad of the fifties if I recall the story I read or heard rightly.
