well i recently recieved a very nice 1989 buck 110 from caleb and was wondering what year they changed the blade material and the reason they changed it ? i read somewhere it was because its easyer to stamp 420? i find both materials good if heat treated right and we know buck is good at this process, thanks guys for any help

I cant find any dates to when this was hanged on the net , anyone have any info

Levine's Guide to Knives 5th edition states that Buck went from 440 to 425M (modified) in about 1982 but they did use up all the old 440 stock. Then in 1994 Buck went to 420HC. It also states that you should remember that existing blades were used up before the switch was made. This caveat prevents collectors from pinning down the exact dates of change. It said nothing about ease of stamping being the reason for change.

How does the 420HC compair to the 440 and 425M? durabilty, hardness, and sharpen ablity?

It's all about chromiun and carbon content which makes the steel harder or softer and more or less likely to rust. Check the links below. I think they will help you out.
