All About Pocket Knives

I'm finding most of the stock I'm able to pick up for scales is 3/8" thick or better. I very rarely see 1/8 - 3/16" thicknesses. Just wondering if it is common to have to sand off all that excess ? Drives me nuts knowing I just swept up a second set of scales off the shop floor !

Google up "Culpepper Bone", they have a large variety of jigged, plain or stag carved bone in some thin pieces. They are one of the largest handle material suppliers around.

I know. I have never gotten the checkout for PayPal to work at all.
I always have to call them.

If they didn't have such good quality material I wouldn't use them.
But they have more selection & better bone handles than anyone else.

I just received two pair of scales, really fast shipping. I hit the clearance rack, since theres no need for me to destroy $40 scales whilst learning ! got the smooth amber bone and bobwire amber bone, both for $4 each. Very nice !

Since I'm a newbie with bone scales, I'm guessing that the dark color will buff out to amber once i start sanding / polishing ?

Almost black, isn't it? Don't worry, it'll turn a nice red, fading to gold as you go deeper.

It is my understanding they supply 98% of knife companies with thier bone handle material (I think they even supply case)

on the amber bone, yes as you sand and buff it will lighten up, that's just the residual dye than settled on the surface.
