thats what was thinking? c platts&sons were made in eldred pa. from 1900-1905, then platts bros started shortly after that in andover ny. so was thinking i have a very old and rare transission knife.

ive been collecting tested or older for over 20 years, i compared it several case bros. jacks i have. from the bone to the shapes of the tangs, to the stamps. this knife is very similiar. i cant do it now, but i will post the similaritys later today.

folks,

Look at these photo's very carefully. I still stand behind my comments in the other section that I have serious doubts about this knife. But again, until I have seen it first hand for examination I can't say for sure. But the shield, pin number, stamping and condition make me nervous at this time.

I would rather be wrong though. Please convince me.

i didnt notice the pins, but that really doesnt bother me. ive seen lots of knives with large shields have 3 on the shield side the 4 on the back. if it had four on the shield side it would be right next to the shield and right next one of the pins holding the shield. what bothered me was the bone. for some reason it just doesnt look right. but im used to the old brown worn groove on the case bros, or the green bone on the bradfords and tested knives. the shield doesnt bother me, platts made alot of contract knives and used alot of diff. shields anyway. the blades and stamps look legit to me. somebody mentioned the double stamping. remember, if this is a legit knife, which i hope it is, i doubt 100 years ago if they cared if it got a little double stamping on it. something else to think about? if they cared 100 years ago about double stamps, pins and little things back then. there wouldnt be many transissions knives! another thing about the bone, they match in color, pattern and wear.

rigwelder,

Point taken on the pins, but it is reason for further investigation, the shield HUMMM!!! I still question but could be convinced otherwise. The bone, far to clean for me, doesn't match the wear on the blades. I can also buy into the double stamp, but what about the other stamp that looks ground out and stamped differently than the others. Just too many things to question. But Hey, Your the one that has to like it. I would be proud to have a piece like that too. I just question if it is real and without seeing it first hand, I just can't say for sure. Keep us informed so that all of us learn from it. Looking forward to it.

ok, l do agree about the bone, it just didnt look right from the start, i was going to say it looked like older german bone, i dont know why? but thats the first thing that popped in my mind when i first seen it. i dont think the blades have much wear at all to be 100 years old. but it really doesnt matter. all anybody can hope for when buying a very old, very rare and very clean from ebay is that its legit! hey, if it is! look what i just stole, if its not, some sucker just made a fool at of me! then again i like it anyway.

I have to agree with PA on this like I said before in another post, I can't put my finger on it exactly, maybe something I seen before as a reference, could be an article having something to do with a similar knife, or just my gut feeling on the read of this knife, the shield, the handles, the fourth pin, what ever, to me it just doesn't feel right, a gut feeling…. or heartburn, I’m not sure. I am in no way the be all end all on knives but it just doesn't feel right to me, if I could nail it down better or with something to back my feeling/heartburn up I would be more than happy to, but I can do no better than this for an explanation. Like PA if I had it in my hand I may have a different opinion. I hope it is the real deal it would be a great price for an old Platts. Sometimes in collecting you take chances and when you do sometimes you hit it big and sometimes you don't...live and learn. Please let us know how if feels and reads once you get it into your hands I would like to see how this goes.

i really cant make up my mind about if its real or fake. if its fake its not recent. because it definately old. blades are pitted, you cant notice the double stamping by the naked eye and the wear on the tang stamps are definately from opening and closing the blades and the backsprings have been used as a hammer. but the knife is still in very good shape. the lady that sold it said she bought a estate in new hampshire and found it in a tobacco can with some silver dollars. anyhow, who knows for sure! i like it and thats all that matters to me anyway!
