All About Pocket Knives

I bought this machinist's tool box awhile back and it was missing the front door.Price was reasonable($45)and it was in otherwise great shape.Made of oak with drawers of OSB with oak fronts.Good sized(25" wide by 15" high by 9 1/2" deep outside dimensions)with green felt lined drawers.
Needed a new lock(the old one had no key and no way to get it apart)which was $5 and a friend made a front to match out of 5 pieces of oak.He was only going to charge me $20 but I gave him double that because it turned out really nice and was worth it to me.
Haven't got around to loading it up with knives yet but will do so as soon as I get some time off.Painting business is going great guns;have a 66 Chevy van in the shop tonight doing the Keep ON Truckin' logo on the back;have a Ford Expedition to stripe tomorrow and a Harley dresser coming in Sunday night for a complete stripe job.Sure kills my antique shop perusing lol.
Anyway here are a couple of pictures.What I like about this box is the handles are on the side which means I can stack another box on top of it.

That's a great box, Ken. It will be spectacular when you fill it up. Can't wait to see the "after" pics.

ya that is a nice feature without the top handle and a real nice tool box too-i'd be scared to load the one i have and grab it by the top handle anyway

Great chest, you got a steal on that one ! In that condition, they usually run about $100 or more. I'm still working on mine, got it stained, hardware on, and fixing some drawers next. Grandkids are here for the week, so production will be down. (and so will grandpa after a few days )

I recently bought this "Spool Cabinet" at an estate auction. I was just thinking what a great knife storage it would make.

I got a call the other day from a friend of mine who runs an antique shop and knows I collects knives and old tool boxes to tell me he had just picked up an old Gertsner machinist's box.He said it wasn't in the greatest of shape and was missing two small drawers and would I be interested in it.
Went over to see it and bought it on the spot.He was right;it isn't in the best of shape but I think it worth preserving.It is a very large one(26"long by 16"high by 9 1/2" deep) and what is unusual about it is instead of being oak it is covered with a black leatherette material.Inside it is all oak.
The center of the box sags about 1/4" and will not allow one of the long drawers to be installed;the back looks like it will need to be replaced and I think I can do it without damaging the leatherette covering.It is out of square and a couple of the joints have pulled apart but I managed to square it up today and get it to latch.I put a scissors jack inside(after taking out the drawers)and jacked it slowly into the position it is supposed to be in and was going to glue it but decided to wait until the back is replaced.I did secure some of the covering that had come loose over the years by using some spray trim adhesive which worked nicely.
Gerstner is closed until July 11th so I can't call and order a key for it.I did check their site and one of the items they sell is the material to recover it.I would like to keep as much of the original as possible but it's good to know that it is available if needed.
I had thought about parting it out if the expense was too much to restore it and hope I don't have to as it is a great old box.I figure if I have $250 into the restoration(including the purchase price)I could double my money if I had to.
