champlin pocket knife from the early 1880's

i have a knife i believe to be made by champlin cutlery of little valley n y prior to 1886 when jbf champlin became cattaraugus cutlery this is a 3" closed small blade is 1-3/8" the large blade is 2"small blade marked 22763 large blade has chand the next letters are not there appear to have been removed while being sharpened below that cutlery co and below that little valley n y the ch is very clear and does not appear to have bee altered another collector has told me its not a champlin but i need to be convinced that its not a champlin can anyone shed any light on this thanks

Welcome to AAPK, Harry. I can't offer an opinion on your knife other than to say it is an intriguing old relic, but I'm sure someone will be along who can give you some good information.

Totally NON expert opinion to follow:
It appears to me that the second letter in the first word of the tang stamp is an "A", leading me to suspect this is a Cattaragus rather than a Champlin.
Please consider the source and take this with a grain of salt.

I agree with Phil,
The second letter on the tang is definately an "A". Also I looked up the pattern number under Cattaraugus and 22763 is a 2 5/8" pearl senator. I would find it hard to believe that this is a coincidence, but one never knows

I agree that it looks to me as a Cat pearl 22763. I have a couple of older Champlin items and they are all marked JBF Champlin, Galvanic or Maine Cutlery. Never seen one marked Champlin Cutlery. You never know but this might be the first
But if I were a betting man I would say Cattaraugus Cutlery.
