Case 8251

Just picked up a new Case at a recent knife show. Knife has original box which has the following information.
Item#02508
2 bld abalone
8251 SS
06/14/98
Knife is a long trapper with a cigar band dividing abalone scales. Funny thing is I can't seem to find any information anywhere regarding this model knife. This '51 model # was used on different Case knives the closest being a hobo manufactured in 1915. I've seen this style in one other white pearl knife and that's it. Anyone know if I've got a rare piece?

I'm gonna take a whack at it anyway, they made similar knives for the CCC in the 80's. I am just gonna guess and say you got a fairly scarce knife, but what do I know

Hi Kutting Back.
I have the abalone and the white MOP of the 8251. I have seen a goldlip mop version as well. Who knows? There may even be a black pearl version as well but I have never heard of nor seen one.
I believe that these were created as a SFO for Shepherd Hills Cutlery or another dealer but don't know for sure. Not sure how many of each were made.
You sure got a pretty one there!

I agree with needbucks, this 8251 is probably a special issue for Shepherd Hills or maybe SMKW, you can shoot them both an e-mail to ask ....One question here, after I left hand clicked on your photo I think I saw a few stress lines on the front side of this handle, am I right or wrong as sometimes these old eyes play tricks on me?

Just got a reply mail from Case. This knive was an exclusive production(sfo) for Shephard Hills Cutlery and only 250 were produced.
Roger - not real sure about the stress cracks but I have found that the paua and abalone material is real grainy. I have several Case with this material and I've noticed what looks like a crack turns out to be just natural material imperfections. The next time I get it out I'll put it under the magnifing glass.

I'd call that a bannana trapper or toad sticker. I think toad sticker is often used to describe single blade versions. I know Case made a few variations of this pattern in the 90s. They seem to be modeled after the old 51 pattern hobo and single blade 51 pattern. I don't know if Case ever made them with a clip and spay blade back in the old days or not.
