Basic maintenance tips?

I just ordered Japanese Choji Oil off eBay.
My question is how do you properly maintain your knife. Do you clean first (with what) then apply oil? Is this Choji Oil good? How often?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Clean & or sharpen first then oil.
Never heard of Choji oil.
If it is the same as WD40 or Remoil "a water displacement" then use it.
Once a month when not in use.
Every time after you use the knife heavily or get some foreign matter on it.
You don't need to, if say you just opened a letter with it or cut a piece of string.

WD-40 can be harmfull to knives and handle materials. It really should only be used to help remove rust or free stuck parts. There are many much better products around like mineral oil for just one example that suit a knife lube, or maintain a rust free blade better.

The best oil I have found for the mechanism of knives is Quick Release.
http://quickreleaseoil.com/
It has brought some snap pack to knives that were completely devoid of any action.
Since finding it, it is all I use on the knife mechanism.
As far as an oil to preserve the knife, protect the steel and to keep moisture in bone, stag or handles made of other natural materials, I use food grade mineral oil, purchased from a pharmacy.
I was not a fan of mineral until I sold Johnnie Fain's collection for his widow.
Johnnie & I had discussed several times his method of preserving his knives; every 6 months he would wipe his knives down with mineral oil. The old stag handles in his collection were very nice & moist due to the mineral oil. It made me a believer in his method.

WD-40 will get gummy over time.

Soooooo....clean your knives with 409 or Fantastic. Correct?
Then apply some sort of oil for steel to keep them from rusting?
Is that the gist?

I used to use WD40 exclusively and never had any problems with it harming any parts of my knives. metal, plastic, natural organic materials and so on.
I switched to Remoil because of it's metal penetrating properties plus the Teflon seems to help repel moisture better.
Your knives your choice.

If you are working on a knife with old celluloid handles I`d definitely stay away from WD-40. I tried using that on a knife to loosen up a tight pivot point once, let it set overnight and the next morn the handles were actually melting/decomposing close to the liners; from what I have read the more modern plastics such as Delrin, etc are`nt affected that way. Live and learn.
