Help with Case Knife

This is a 316-5 / SSP Case knife. It has been laid too close to a fire and some of the leather rings on the handle have melted. I would like to attempt this repair myself but don't see how to get the butt end loose for repair. Would appreciate suggestions and advise.

I think if you look closely you will find that the end cap is pinned on. You will need
to drive this pin out to remove the pommel for your repair. Someone who knows
far more than I will come along. Also, have you searched this site? Very good info

My understanding is that the end cap on a Case hunter is actually formed of molten metal that is poured into a mold attached to the tang. So there would be no pin. I saw the setup to do this at the factory. You could try sending it to Case for repair.

I have never seen leather melt. Probably because it does not melt, it will char or burn.
I don`t know exactly what happened to that handle but it looks like it was eaten away, maybe a hungry rat or some type of acid
The easiest way to repair that knife is to cut off the leather rings and leave the pommel in place. Then fit either wood, plastic, or bone handles in between the guard and pommel. Pin the two halves together and be done with it. JMO

I did inquire from Case on this and they said $15 labor, $15 parts, and $7.50 S&H. That would put $37.50 in the repair and I'm not sure it's worth that. Thanks for the comments I will decide what to do from here.

If you could establish the age of the knife that might help you determine the value.
I know nothing about Case, but there are folks here who do know.
