All About Pocket Knives

What is your first choice for scales on a Great Eastern knife? There are some that didn't get on the list. You can add more choices in a post, also jigging patterns or special run favorites.

And no, I'm not doing market research for GEC today.

My first choice is always smooth Buffalo Horn, but the one example I have from GEC in BH came with the worst looking horn of any BH handled knfe I own. So I tend to stay away from their BH knives.

That said, I have a short run GEC #23 in Ox Horn which was my favorite for a while.....



But I can't say right now I have a "first choice" in handle material from them that I look for constantly when choosing my purchases from them. Although in my collection I have a favorite, one I take out more than the others, to fondle and drool over. It's in Jigged Blue River Bone, and the color on this is just outstanding........



The combination of this particular jig and this color is just sweet on this #23 Farmer. Although lately I have developed a new interest in Snakewood since getting two in this handle material. But for now I chose Jigged Bone from your list.

2X they do an amazing job with the jigged bone and it's all done in house. Cutting, dying, jigging, the whole deal. I saw a good video on YouTube by Greg from TSA knives showing off 5 different types of jigging on five barlows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCQd6mo4yLQ at about 3:00 on the video. He lists the jigging patterns as Rogers,herringbone, single wave, Sheffield, and jigged bone.

If you are refering to the one I pictured above, that one isn't Buffalo Horn. It's actually Ox Horn.

Mine came with some ugly BH on the mark side.

I will show ya' a couple of nice Buffalo Horn's too !!!!!!!! cause I like em' too !!!!!!!!!!!

I went with Burnt Stag, as I like the 'carmelized' look that it often has …

Of course, the Red Buffalo is just beautiful, the Mammoth Ivory is amazing, the Primitive Bone shows up as everything from wood-shed rustic to Sunday school smooth, the Genuine Stag is .. well, its Genuine Stag ... etc, etc …

I love 'em all!

i think gec messed up on the description.
an ox is a castrated male bovine (domesticated cattle).
i'm not sure how they determined that horn came from castrated male cattle.
the only other animal known as an "ox" is musk ox, which that is definitely not.
that looks a lot more like water buffalo horn.

Like all the choices Mike,but I'm pretty much a homer for well figured snakewood....

I only have one, but I love the Elk stag and all it's qualities.
The color changes kinda through me off at first, but after having it ride in the pocket for awhile the white mellowed into a beautiful darker stag.
I love the warmth it holds as well.


O'yeah, the fact that it doesn't get slippery when wet, helps a great deal.

Could be but can't say for sure, just going by the COA they sent with the knife. It does look like nice BH......alot better than the actual BH version I have. But I'm no Bovine expert so I just don't know. Good looking stuff though.

Stag is making a very strong showing here...

I would love to add some more Elk stag into my collection, and rotation.
I also am blown away by how much I love the stainless steel blade in my #12, it has great edge holding abilities and it's perfect for the trout streams.

I hope they can get an Elk Stag Jack out sometime soon for you to add to your beautiful collection.

I just love the sound, AMERICAN Elk Stag.
