Very Cool...... ::tu::

Would have never thought of a coffee cup moonlighting as a steel.

Sometimes the edge of a blade just needs staightened instead of reshaping the blade edge with sharpening...thats if it were sharpened correctly first. Thanks Catt...

If you buy Spyderco Sharpmaker, it comes with a DVD showing how to use it, and all the things you can sharpen with it. He also goes through a mini history of sharpening knives, and he shows how some folks used to sharpen a knife on the inside rim of a big pottery crock. He said something about using the inside rim keeps the knife at the proper angle. The inside rim was un-glazed, like the bottom edge of a coffee cup.

That's funny, one of my dad's prized possessions is a redwing crock from the farm he grew up on. I asked him what they used it for and why it was special. He said it was because that is what his dad (my grandpa) used to ....wait for it....sharpen his knives with. Amazing! ::tu:: ::tu::

I have heard of folks putting a double edge razor in a shot glass and holding it against the side and sliding it back and forth to sharpen the blade. Same concept I guess. Seems you'd have to have the right size crock for the knife.

I like stones.
