All About Pocket Knives

I have seen discussion on variations of this secondary blade configuration on other forums and in Knife World Magazine. The blade on this Kabar is original and is odd to say the least. My research discovered that it is indeed made for a purpose. It is not ground down by the owner etc. It is a stitch removal tool. I have never seen one before. Neat stuff don't ya think? This would have been a good quiz for my fellow enthusists.

The patent number on the blade does not match the patent on google.

Your eyes are better than mine. I couldn't make out the numbers from the photo so I asked the owner to read them to me. The number he gave certainly seems to fit the blade in question don't you think?

My guess would have been a hook remover, for fishing.

Looks like a lobster claw, used to remove knots. iduno, just a suggestion

I would have guessed a beer can tab lifter.

Well, then it would have been made in Solingen.

My wife has a stich remover in her sewing basket and the blade looks about like that one, but I wouldn't expect to find that blade on a pocket knife

TJ it is my understanding that many ladies used to keep a small pocket knife in their sewing kit. Often times that knife would be a small pressbutton that would allow them to pop the blade open with the push of a button. (Yep that's right, grannys packin switchblades ) They didn't even have to let go of what they were working on to open the knife. With that said, it seems reasonable to me that one might find a knife with a specialized blade used for sewing work.

I don't doubt that for a second Phil. We've seen more than one pocket knife come out of Granny's sewing basket here on forum.

I think it is a can opener.Here is a close up of a knife I posted awhile back;note the similarity in shape.There is a British patent # on the blade(866,869).Just my opinion.

well...if we are guessing, it looks like the tool that made the holes in the oldtime condensed milk cans...
always wondered how every old timer could make the same sized hole in cans scattered everywhere

Speaking of that;here is one that came directly from a granny's sewing basket.Got it from a friend of mine who got it from his grandmother's estate.The blades have never been sharpened and the edges flattened from years of cutting thread.The closeup of the scales shows where the thread was repeatedly dragged across them wearing grooves into them.Even came with a nice little chamois pouch.I left the blades untouched.I found out later that this one is somewhat rare in that the master blade is a clip rather than the more common spear.

There are two other type of tools I am aware of that have a ‘V’ at the end of a blade beside the stitch ripper and the can opener as posted by Ray (K7K), they are a Greens Keeper tool and of course the fish hook remover (a.k.a. as a disgorger).

Bernard Levine recently showed a short hook remover in his column in Knife World. I had not seen such a short version of the hook remover before.

Here is a Greens Keeper tool. A Schrade Walden #733.

It has been verified that it is an original Kabar knife with a stitch remover. The best part, I know the owner and its for sale!!!!!!!!!!! Not mine, not mine to sell, I have nothing in it other than I thought it was neat.

Here are some pictures of a(relatively)modern day seam ripper.As you can see the point of the blade is relatively long and thin although very little is exposed by the guard.Don't know who made this one;it is an ad giveaway.I have a couple of these.
That KA-BAR is definitely an unusual one.
