All About Pocket Knives

The first Overton County Knife Club meeting was not a good turn out. I have spent alot of time and money trying to put this club together. I've talked to the city and county mayor and went by the chamber of commerce. I have stopped by every place where the older men sit around and drink coffee to talk to them, made anouncements on the radio, made cards and passed those out, put ads in the paper, made flyers and put those out, made post on the local website and made alot of phone calls. All this and only Three people showed up. Only one person besides me brought knives. One person that showed told me he could have had about 7 others come with him but all they wanted to know was how much are dues and what's involved. I told him, We have to have the people here first to get a president, secretary, treasurer, ect, so we can decide about issues such as dues and involvements. The cafe was nice enough to give us a place to meet free of charge only if 10-15 people ate otherwise, I would have to pay rent. Needless to say, I had to pay rent.

I am planning on having another metting in two weeks, hopefully things will turn out better. I may have to sell what few knives I have just so I will have the money for the growth of this club. I guess you can say I'm on a mission...

I hear storys of older men sitting on the courthouse square whittling while their wives were shopping and mingling around. Well, that was the case till 15 yrs ago. Now, its prohibited. A person can not whittle on the courthouse square anymore. If caught, will be fined and their knife confiscated. I talk to people and they want the old heritage to come back. They want to see whittling on the courthouse square again. I want to be that man that helps bring it back. I guess you can say again, I'm on a mission...

Through all this, I feel overwhelmed. I still have hope and I will keep looking foreward. At this point, I am the one man responsible for the Overton County Knife Club and for meeting with people about it and about whittling on the courthouse square....

Jimbo, these things take time, don't give up. You got three this time, maybe it will be five next. Draft some relatives and drag some friends along, maybe there are some kids in the neighborhood. You're doing something worthwhile, so don't get discouraged.
