All About Pocket Knives

Aside from a couple German ones I missed fishing out this is all the English knives I've picked up during the two years I've been over here. Eventually I hope to have enough time to get decent individual pictures. This doesn't include the fixed blades or the big bag of military folders I've picked up. The box in the bottom corner is full of broken ones I intend to repair if I ever get the time.

Hey, over 200 knives. Not a bad haul. It seems to me to be a pretty solid group. Lots of pearl.

It's hard to pick a favorite but there is a large wood handled James Barber ERA down on the bottom row near the box that I absolutely love and it's mint. I've collected knives since I was a kid but not as actively as I do now. I spent most of my money in recent years on vintage bottle openers and tools as well. Vintage cars and home remodeling have side tracked the knife hobby as well in recent years but over here it's pretty much the only hobby I can manage so I've embraced it a bit more. I intend to get decent pictures of all of them as soon as there is some decent natural light for a few days. I'm hopeless with a camera otherwise. I've got a scanner now too so I may try that as soon as I figure it out.

Here is a neat Thomas Turner I picked up at the Alexandra Palace show today. The button on the bottom goes all the waty through the fake ivory one piece body and when you pull it down the knife opens and closes when you put it back up. Near mint condition with a stainless blade that is etched.

Knives like this are my favorites just because their nature and mine are so alike. Nothing pretty but tough, practical and utilitarian. I'm always worried about breaking the pearl ones and would happily swap every pearl knife for one in stag, a good hard wood or bone.

I'm particularly happy with that one. The pile side scale is missing a bit and has a slightly weathered spot that was where it stuck up out of the dirt when it was buried at some point but is otherwise in great shape. I paid £2.00 for it which comes out to about $3.00 That and a little elbow grease put it right as rain. One of my best bargains to date. Scrounging and making friends with junk dealers really pays off sometimes.

Very nice collection there. Well done on the speed you've managed to collect them too.

Robert, where do you find most of them over there? Are there flea markets there like here? garage sales?

I go to flea markets and antique fairs to get most of them. Antiques stores occasionally have them. There is a knife show or two as well as military fairs. I've heard auctions are good as well but I have to buy cheap and can't afford to beat people to death with my wallet.

The scales are a plastic similar to delrin and textured to look like stag.

Picked up a few more over the last two weeks. Couple of German ones in there but mostly English again.
