All About Pocket Knives

I realize that this is a sore subject on this forum. But with all the members now frequenting this fine forum many of which collect and use china made knives like rough riders, china made schrades, etc. I wonder if maybe the powers that be might consider a section on the forum for them to post their knives as well.

The only reason I bring this up is to try and keep the flaming from happening to people when they do post a pic of a china made knife. It might bring some civility to the forum while also allowing members to not feel bad or get negative comments posted towards them when they want to post a pic of their knife which happens to be made in china.

So, what do you think? Do you think it would be a good idea? Or do you think it would alienate those who feel so strong about only buying american made?

I agree____with Craig ( somewhat??)_______to each,his own--whatever,someone collects ,is by,his own choice,and if you don't like it or disagree,with the choice--don't bash,it with negative comments.There are lots,of reasons,for collecting / accumulating , knives, and like many--this forum,has taught me more, about knives,in my first year,than, I could have discovered,""alone"" in a lifetime.____this is just my humble opinion,and with it & $2 bux,you can get a nice,Pakistan knife !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Monk, I think we are on the same page as to what we prefer to collect. Personally, I prefer to collect usa made knives. Do I own china made knives.....yes and am currently carrying a s&w stockman just because I wanted to try one out.

That being said, I just feel like we could gain even more members by not bashing what someone posts just because it may have come from china. Then, maybe they will see the value of collecting american made or even (dare I say another countries offerings?) german made knife to bring real monetary value to their collecting.

Just wanted to throw the idea out there for consideration. Seems a shame to discourage anyone from collecting knives just because of the knives they choose to collect coming from china.

I think that China, Taiwan and some Pakistan knives offer something that most USA made knives do not. That is you can beat them and toss them. I wouldn't dream of using some of my knives to open cans and strip kindling for a fire. The only thing I use some for now is to field dress an animal or just show off for their quality and collectability. If you get the A.G. Russell catalog you would think that he has single handedly made Middle Eastern and far east knives into quality pieces of steel. I have a good sized collection of scout knives but the only scout I use is made by Rough Rider. The rest sit and wait for the day my family can pick over them while I take my dirt bath. The average guy just can't afford to buy American and then pound the heck out of it. I wish I could carry my Case USA era hunter to work and use it cutting cardboad and cutting banding wire but that would be nuts. I have to say that a good old Buck 110 or 112 can fit the bill but it hurts to do it to them. Can you imagine getting a GEC stag elephant toe to carry and cut on the loading docks? A $15 Rough Rider would do just fine. The other day I won a Rough Rider scout for .99 on Ebay and then tossed it on my dashboard just because I could. I guess I should have just said that I will only collect American but I will only beat the crap out of China knives.

True story. Do you remember that Chinese "Steel Warrior" I posted a picture of a few days ago? Well, it's gone.

A client came by, and I finished polishing his knives. All he had were twenties, and I owed him change, and I had none.

I asked him if he would take the Steel Warrior with a polished edge. He agreed, and took it in lieu of a five dollar bill.

I'm beginning to like Chinese knives myself.

On the face of it, I agree simply because we are free to buy whatever we wish. It's our money. And as mentioned many times, a hobbyist does not always need 'quality' to skin out a varmint, scrape mud off his boots, use as a truck knife or as a mule to teach a youngster how to sharpen.

In fact, I put a five-blade eight dollar knife on my next order for my distributor. I'm going to polish a few blades and see if we can have some fun at an auction.

In all seriousness, it might make a few bucks for the forum, inspire a round of laughs and wind up in the pocket of a guy who justs wants an edge when he cleans the garage.

I don't see a thing wrong with this, and any man can opt out. A debate can also develop in that forum, we just have to agree to disagree and use a little decorum. I was always a model citizen in dealing with "over-served locals," and as such I would be a shining example.

i think SPYDERCO knives should have a shot before Pakistan & China. they are leading the industry in steels and a American company

I think this thread was meant to be about Chinese knives because most people dont like em and it would be a good idea to have a post for those that do like them, so they dont have to hear the Chinese knives suck thing from the rest of us (I am guilty of this,I admit). Spydercos on the other hand are a higher end quality made knife and arent in the same class as the Chinese made stuff.

Like I stated when I originated this post. I realize this is a sore subject on this forum. However, I also don't like seeing guys who do post chinese made knives being flamed and rediculed and their post being taken down the political arena that it always does when someone post a pic of the chinese knives.

All I'm suggesting is a section for those who do like them and want to post their knives to have a section to be allowed to do so without having to endure the bad post against their selection of knives.

If you will look at my signature you will see I am a custom knifemaker. I know many on here are either custom makers or customizers/embellishers. All of us could look down our noses and flame everyone who only buys a factory made knife instead of a custom. Yet, we don't. I don't because I realize that most people don't want to collect or use customs due to several factors the biggest of which is cost. It is the same with many in today's economy who want to collect knives but can only afford the china made stuff to collect. I hope to encourage them by allowing them a space to collect their type of knives without being pressured by the america only crowd.

By allowing them a space and letting them be a part of the forum, we can guide them into bettering themselves as collectors and educate them to make better decisions therefore buying more american made products. Just flaming them everytime they post a pic of their new prized possesion will only run them off and then you will never be able to encourage them to buy american made knives.

Think it's a good idea--i buy em now and then but remeber a time when my boys were young i wouldn't allow them to by China made knives at a gun showbut that was 20 yrs. ago and things are changing. i say start it up--gotta go Chinesee cell phone is ringin-

I agree, I think its time to add a china made knife section. I'm 36 yrs old and love collecting all kinds of knives. I'm trying to get a local knife club started. I find that alot of the younger generation start off by buying china made (Rough Riders). As I see it, we have the older crowd dealing with knives and doing their own thing while kids are too busy on the tv or something. What ever happen to the Good Ol Days. What ever happen to Heritage and Culture?

I LOVE this place and think it would be good to bring in a new section. Maybe it would draw a younger crowd who may share the same intrest.

All in all, I bet, let the truth be known we all have a china made knife....in a junk drawer....in the cabinet....OH I almost foregot....in the Kitchen.....

there is a chinese section now bryan added it a while ago, i post there now and then

Might a well have a china section Case does now too .
