All About Pocket Knives

Has anyone seen a whittler knife with this blade configuration before? I've not seen a knife with a small coping blade on the same end as the master, but then my experiences are somewhat limited. I thought the whole point of the whittler pattern was to have the master blade lying across both springs. The handle looks consistent with a swell center whittler but the blade configuration look more like a stockman IMO. Just wondering what you all think. s-k

hey s-k, that is a strange duck. does'nt fit the criteria for a true whittler, but then the wood would'nt know.

Yeah, it's either a swell center or coke bottle, never heard of a swell center coke bottle, that's a new one on me. It seems to be configured more like a stockman, like no whittler I've ever seen.

That same pattern or design is an Official Boy Scout knife, only it has black or brown plastic handles and a federal shield with an eagle and "Be Prepared", 1960-69.
Two springs and it is or was referred to as a "Whittler".
Face side of the master is saber ground and the back has the normal taper, just as this one appears. Same size and tang stamp.
Every one I have ever seen has had shrunken handles, Big Time.

I looked, but could not find it/pattern in any of my Camillus references, in Stockmans or Whittler patterns

I don't remember seeing that pattern but a very nice Candy Striper!!! Go ahead and buy it for us so I can trade you something for it later on...

That is a standard Camillus whittler pattern. A somewhat unique take on the whittler pattern. Large main blade on a thicker spring & secondary blades sharing a smaller spring. I have a couple. I also have a Schrade & an Imperial of the same configuration that I suspect were made by Camillus on contract.

That is a very common pattern made by Camillus; however that one has been rehandled - Camillus never made it in candy stripe.

Schrade also made the same pattern under the Schrade and Ulster trademarks (these were made in house by Schrade no by Camillus).

Utica also made the same pattern under the Kutmaster trade mark.

This pattern or style of "whittler" was introduced by each of the above companies after WWII. When knife companies retooled after WWII, a lot of the older harder to produce patterns went away as the market became more competetive. I suspect that this style was introduced to replace the old "split back" whittler which was a lot harder to produce.

Schrade ket theirs in their line until the early to mid 80's. Camillus may still be offering it in their Yello Jaket line, I am not sure.
