I need feedback on a new home page for All AboutPocketKnives

Hi everyone. I've been working on a new design for the home page of All About Pocket Knives. Figured maybe you could let me know if I'm on the right track, or if I'm just plain messing things up.

OK Bryan, since you asked.....
I prefer the old one just slightly better. They are both nice, but the new one is a little too "active" for me. I can see the need to stay "fresh" however.....and changing won't make me leave (not that easily!).
Oh, the scrimshaw by Colin turned out superbly. Well done!! (Insert thumbsup icon.....oh, nevermind).

New one hands down, nice job and great effects. El Lobo is right, you have to keep it fresh. It is proven that web sites are passed up easily if they do not please the eye immediatly. Even if it is your favorite subject. Bryan you have a talent to doubt.

The new one is definately more like where things seem to be going. It appears more professional, in my opinion. I don't do GUIs, but I have been developing embedded software for 20 years, so I frequently use the web.

Thanks to everyone for your valuable opinions! The new one has a fairly comfortable lead, so I have put it up as the official home page.
El Lobo... My next project is going to be a thumbs up emoticon just for you.
