All About Pocket Knives

what is everybodys favorite style of knife to collect sucha as doctors, trapper,
canoe, peanut, stockman etc? i seem to have taken a likeing to the stockman in particular, i also kind of like the doctors knife because of its sleekness.

I started out collecting mostly lockback folding hunting knives, but lately the pattern I seem to collect most is equal end cattle knives. Here are a couple pics I dredged up from the insurance file:

Zeke I started out with the stockman, I have changed some over the years, I like older knives of almost any pattern and maker. The USA knives pre WW2 and WW1 if I can find them are my favorite. Here is a Water Ville cattle knife I like. click for larger pic. Click again for full screan pic.

That's a great looking knife stockman. Can you tell us a little more about history of that one please? By the way, thank-you for your kind comments re some of my posts. s-k

SK Thanks for your comments it is made in WaterburyCT 1843-1913 BL 4th Ed. I have seen some books that say Water Ville CT. So if anyone knows for sure please let me know. This knife has orginal handles blades ect. It has had a back spring replaced. It works well half stops on all blades. Just a nice old knife.

Hi stockman...Goins says Waterville Co Waterbury 1865-1890 and has some other similar listings p295 if you have Goins book. If not, let me know with the exact wording and I might be able to provide more info. I love those old knives and sweet MOP s-k

I do have a Goins, it is the first ed. and not as complet as the newer ones. The tang is stamped Water- Ville on two lines
on all blades any info you have will be nice. I have a lot of books but it seems like they are never enough.

Can't say this is an exact match but Water-ville Co is listed as 1890-1913. There is a photocopy of a three bladed cattle knife, from a Frank Percy catalog dated 1898. It looks to have a bone handle though. That's all I can contribute. s-k
