WOW... Thats a BIG request...
If you got the money Zeke, I may suggest going to
knifeworld.com and invest in a reference guide. They have some that will list every knifemaker known past & present.
My personal preferences, I like the following:
Case (USA)
Schrade (USA)
Kissing Crane (German)
Fight 'n Rooster (Germany)
for older knives (Antiques)
Challenge Cutlery Co
Brantford (has my interest for now)
Older Boy Scout Knives
Parker Frost Knives (they were only together for a couple years)
And I am always looking for Easy Open Tear Drop Patterns.
My suggestion is, get some reference materials. Find the patterns that you enjoy, or name brands, and handle material etc etc. Everyone has their preference!

a little time spent reading ( i live in a small tejas town and even our library is pretty well stocked with knife books) and surfing the net will give more info than anyone can absorb. read all the past posts or at least skim them for some of the answers. do a search on the word knife..... a gazillion places to visit.
there is a lot to learn and personally i think i have only begun.
