Hello,
New to knive collecting. Was just wandering the best way to preserve my newly acquired investments. I just bought a 40-64 pretty bone toenail and the guy said put vaseline on tangs and put in case? Doese this sound right? What if i don't have box or case. Thanks for any help. JJ Parker
P.S> Man this hobby is expensive.

I would advise against using Vaseline on any part of your knife blade. It may trap moisture under the layer of jelly and actually accelerate oxidation. I'd advise using Renwax on the blades instead.

JJ_______most all the guys, reccomend Ren-Wax,for the long time storage--repels,dirt, moisture, and finger prints---you can put, Ren-Wax,on the blades and the handles, for all-over protection---I also put a few drops of mineral oil,on the hinges, before tucking away.

I can tell you for a fact not to use Vaseline! I ruined a few good knives when I was a younger because I greased 'em up real good before I put them away. I discovered girls about that same time and forgot all about those knives for years....

I was struggling with the same problem. Hide or display? What to do with the boxes? My solution was display boxes with storage underneath for boxes and sheaths. I usually have one or two for sale on eBay. Oops, first picture is upside down.
Can anyone comment on whether or not it hurts the knives to display with the blades open? Will it weaken the springs?

That's a neat display box. Kinda' reminds me of the knife displays on the store counter that had the storage space in the back.
When the blade is fully open, the position of the spring is the same as the closed position, some times referred to as the spring being "at rest". There has been some discussion on the forum concerning the displaying of blades partially opened. This usually means the spring is under some tension all the time. There are opinions on both sides of the of that question. Personally I tend to lean toward the idea of displaying fully open of fully closed, unless the knife has a half stop and there again it is in the resting position. Another point to remember, a spring that controls 2 blades at opposite ends of the knife is vulnerable if both blade are only opened part way.

I keep most of my loose knives in knife rolls similar to this. Is there any benefit to keeping knives like this than to keeping them in the original box for long time storage. Do you keep all the original boxes, I do. Ken
