All About Pocket Knives

Hi,

I am looking to buy a Rambo III knife and was wondering from where can i buy it ? Also can anybody pls share some more info on it.. e.g. what it is called (yeah i am pretty new to knives

) Also is it legal to have one at home ?

Amazon is selling it for around 100 dollars.

In my opinion the Rambo knives fall into the broad category of "Fantasy Knives". I say that because the design lends itself more to the imagination than to practical real world use. A lot of younger collectors are drawn initially to that type of knife and if that's what you like then enjoy it. Most older codgers like myself tend to gravitate toward something a bit more practical in its design and usually a lot smaller than those knives tend to be.
What do you have in mind doing with that knife once you have it?
As far as whether it is legal or not, you need to check with you local law enforcement personel to find out as laws vary widely from state to state and even from city to city within the same state sometimes. I'd suggest you inquire about that issue prior to purchasing one.

By the way, welcome to AAPK. I hope you will hang around here a while. There are lots of knowedgable knife collectors and dealers who hang out here. Knife collecting is a great hobby that can last a lifetime. I've been at it for over 42 years and I'm just getting started. Welcome aboard.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the info. Well i am not a hunter so i will never be using the knife to hunt anything or to clean or skin an animal

. The reason i want to buy a Rambo III knife is i was a huge fan of the Rambo series and just wanted to get that knife. I am not a collector yet

I am also not planning to conceal carry it so was wondering are there any laws around just buying it as a collection item ? I will surely check my state laws on this one but was just wondering.

Btw, i have seen some very beautiful pocket knives in some souvenir shops and they didn't had any restrictions posted like they have for firearms

Can somebody from Washington state pls chime in for more details on this one ?

Hi,

You say you are not a collector, yet you are looking for knives to buy. I'm inclined to agree with Phil about the "Rambo" knives.

I suggest that you shop around for nice knives of proven lineage and invest your money in those. $100 will buy some nice cutlery. Fancy shiny stuff in gift shops is pretty much just that. Most are made in China and will have no real value once they are yours. Look at all the fantasy type knives for sale on craigslist in your area. You'll see what I'm talking about.

If you were to start buying good solid knives now, in five years you could have quite a sizable investment and something that if need be you can get more than what you paid out of it, plus you;ll have some good solid knives to enjoy in the process.

you guys are right. The rambo knife is a fantasy knife. I was looking around on Amazon and also saw couple of videos on youtube and thought.. boy what will i do with an 18" total length

I was also looking at some of the collections of members here and the knives look beautiful plus they have some practical purpose. I can get some good practical knives in price of one Rambo fantasy knife

I have already started my research towards some folders .. but i am looking more of military tactical knives in full matt black color..

can somebody pls suggest some..

ohh boy .. so many knives and so less money.

Willie, I wouldn't mind having one of those Warthogs myself. I don't know what attracts me to them (or is it them to me?) but then, that's the world of knives (or any other hobby for that matter).

A couple of practical yet reasonably priced straight knives in black are the Buck Nighthawk and Ka-Bar fighting knife. (buy it now price on eBay, $40-$60) I have one of the Bucks and several of the fighting knives by Ka-Bar, Case and Camillus. If the seven inch blade of the Ka-Bar is too much for you, they now make a short version with a five inch & a quarter inch blade.
Both knives are available in all black.

Cold Steel puts out several straight knives in all black but they're significantly more expensive. SOG has some kick butt straight knives, I've drooled over for some time but could never convince myself to pull the trigger on.

Look around. As much as eBay gets trashed on this site, it's a good place to window shop and can be a good place to buy as long as you keep your wits about you and don't let the drool short out your keyboard. See something you like? Google is your friend.

I am currently looking at the buck 55, 110 and 112. They are not fixed blades but are so beautiful

I carry a Buck 55 that a friend gave me for Christmas last year. Very nice and at 3 3/8" closed, it's very pocket friendly. It comes out of the package very sharp and is made in USA. I've grown to like it very much. If you look around a little bit, you can find them in the $30 - $40 range.

My opinion only, unless you work outside or in a profession where a knife pouch on your belt doesn't look out of place, the 110 at 4 7/8" is a bit large for EDC. I know nothing about the 112. Same design as the 55 & 110 but 4 1/4" closed which may be just right for some folks and too large for others. Average price for the 112 seems to be in the $35 - $45 range.

i might not be able to carry it everyday coz weapons are not allowed at my workplace but yeah Buck 55 is pretty small pls shouldn't be illegal to carry if i am camping or in the woods.

I am comparing the 110 and 112 with 55 and both of them are big in size, so would be illegal in my state as a carry. I am planning to check at Walmart if they carry a buck 55 or else ebay.

A. "Dangerous knife" means any fixed-blade knife and any other knife
having a blade more than three and one-half inches (3 1/2") in length.

A Buck 110 has a 3 3/4" blade so you're out of luck on that one. The Buck 112 has a 3" blade and the Buck 55 has a 2 3/8" blade so you're good to go on either of those.

Jerry, I agree about that warthog. It has something about it that just says.. HARD WORKIN CLASS in a funky way. LOL I beleive it would go the distance in about any situation you could run it through. It stays with the "bug out bag" stuff.

Read that link Jerry gave very carefully. It was my impression that the particular section relating to the length was Seattle Municipal Code, I do oft times misread though. You might want to consider a Buck 184 Buckmaster, It would fill your reqs. for a Rambo type and also for a collector item. It is considerably more than a Hundred bucks.

Moss, Thanks for the link, that 184 looks great but now i am thinking more on the carry side and am looking at folders rather than fixed blades.

yeah i read that link and it does say Seattle municipal code. So does that mean that, that particular law is for the city of seattle only ? now the thing is, the "Dangerous Knife" depicted in the "Seattle municipal code" is referred in the RCW in the beginning

so .. RCW is for the state and the definition is in the municipal code.. #$%$%@#$% i am confused

I believe the Muni code is a tightening of the RCW for the city only. The RCW could possibly be a defining to make some cutlery such as kitchen type legal. Sounds as though you are going to wind up with a leatherman Micra. I have found that one of those is totally sufficient as long as you have a .45 to back it up. That of course would be only when walking around in your own house.

RAMBO III is an awesome knife.Weather it's a handmade one you buy from Gil at the show or made elsewhere.
The RAMBO III in particular was the most sold knife ever produced!Some other model could have surpassed that record by now but i don't know.I'm sure someone would love to debate to death that.
I always see Gil Hibben at the BLADE shows; & recently at the SPIRIT OF STEEL show in Knoxville.He sells his RAMBO knives on his table.Seems to me like FANTASY is still popular.Otherwise the prisident of the knifemakers guild wouldn't be selling fantasy.

I believe the original poster asked for info on where to find a RAMBO III.Well,I sold an original NIB RAMBO III on my AAPK store recently for $150.I have another original in the sheath but without the box or certificate.I could sell it i guess for the right price,but i do not have it listed.Send a pm if interested still.Or check fleabay. "UCforums" is also a good place to check for movie replicas,etc.

Steel, that is a great knife.. but for me.. its kinda expensive plus.. bit big. Moreover i would love to conceal carry it.. rather than just keep it at home.. so now i am not that serious about the Rambo knife

may be sometime down the line when i save money.. will get one

well the knife is great but i would say but fragile. The tip is so sharp that in the process of making it that sharp.. they have made it very thin. I was cutting a cardboard box and i dropped the knife and now the tip has broken off.
