All About Pocket Knives

Hello Gentlemen\Ladies;
I just signed up today to your forum. I have one question for you all. If you were to start from scratch today with availibity being what it is, what brand of knife would you start to collect? I am tired of guns & bottles and need a new form of entertainment.

Most any USA or German made folders will do.

Queen and Shatt & Morgan are nice too! I like Great Eastern the best.

Brand new knives, vintage or both? I like the Pennsylvania made knives; Queen in it's various forms, Great Eastern Cutlery and Case.

Somethin' good and rusty, while I was hopin' for somthin' shiney and old.

Start off picking up some things that grab your interest and see where it leads...Not the quickest or most economical way to build a collection, but surely the most fun.

That said, the GEC knifes are stunningly good quality, limited availability and, while expensive, a lot less expensive than many vintage Cases.

Anything made in the US

I would also say Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Canal Street and of course GECs.
I collect mostly first year knives from GEC and many low runs from them Schatt and Queen. Enjoy the forum and WELCOME! Here's a little Schatt Whittler for you to look at.

I do not know how much your going to start with in the way of $$$. $100.00 per knife or $40.00 per knife? One a week or one per day?

If I was just starting out now and was thinking to buying low and some day selling high. The first brand comes to my mine is Boker. They are well made and low cost yet. Even new ones. But make sure they are not made in CHINA. Some new ones are now. That is the reason I think the USA made BOKER will be a gr8 one's to start with. This is Just My Opinion and thats what you asked for.

I was colecting old American whisky bottles. I let my uncle have $$ my collection. I think we counted about 150 pcs. My wife's cousion is a digger he has over 500 pcs. the last time I talked to him. One of his best finds in my opinion was a fully intact churn with lid. It was completly buried at an old houseplace.

Thats cool JW. My back won't let me dig much anymore but back in 03 my diggin buddy and I were lucky enough to dig up 21 different U.S.A. Hosp. Dept. bottles out of an Indian wars fort. I probably got over 3 or 4 hundred bottles myself, but those Hosp. bottles were the Motherlode! Part of my grandkids inheritance.

PS. As far as knives go, I prefer the new GEC.'s and the old Case's. Just my opinion. Lots of great ones in between as well.

Depends on your tastes:
Tactical folders: Zero Tolerance and Bench Made are good ones to start with in this category. ($$-$$$$)

Traditional folders/Slip Joints: Anything made in the USA and Germany, wide variety of sizes and configurations. ($-$$$)

Gentleman Pocket knives: Usually small knives with exotic handle & blade materials or engraved bolsters. ($$-$$$$)

Fixed blade: self explanatory ($-$$$$)

My collection is a mishmash of stuff I like, it was bigger once, but have been getting rid of some knives to finance others.

J.W. Welcome to AAPK. Re: Knife collecting. What's your goal?
Are you looking to build a collection that is based on resale value?
Do you want to collect for entertainment and simply enjoy the hunt?
Do you have a passion for knives?
Or is this something different that will pique your interest for a while until like the guns and bottles, knives also become boring?

From everything I've seen on this forum, you have to be very careful with the older Case knives. They are not for the novice, faint of heart or shallow pockets. It appears there is quite a bit of skulduggery goes on with them. Other than that, follow the advice of the majority. Buy US and German made knives and buy what you like.

I started collecting Schrades in 2004, just after they went out of business.
Most of my knives have increased in value since then.

If I was starting from scratch now, I think I would focus my attention on Camillus.
They went out of business in 2007, but you can still find new Camillus knives on store shelves today.
They made lots of knives for other cutlery companies, so there are many variations of patterns to collect.
Since they had been in business for about 130 years there are plenty of knives to be had, they made millions of knives. They made over 17,000,000 (seventeen million) knives during WWII alone. There are plenty out there to collect and while the prices starting to go up, they are still very reasonable.

What ever you decide to collect, collect it because you like it and enjoy it. Don't think you will get rich on it.
Your grandchildren might cash in, buy you probably won't.

That is my opinion.

Many of us gave you good ones to start with.

It would be nice to know your thoughts and head you on your way. So you not make costly errors.

Shucks I still make errors and ask for help here. EVEN IN SPELLING..

Looks like Queen \ Shatts & Morgan & GEC to start. But I would not pass up anything that catches my eye. I am trying to make up my mind for an order now. Probably one of each. If boss knew how many hours I have spent this week on the web I would probably never get off his S@#! list.
