Info on Remington knife

Anyone have any info on this knife. The big blade is stamped R5143. Small blade stamped

This one is a foot spraying apparatus...
Are you sure the second patent number is correct?
As for the pattern... I would call that knife a swayback pen. Many would say it's a small two bladed congress.

Bryan,
I found your comment about sway back verses congress interesting. I would have called it a congress but you may be right. What to others think about this pattern. Does a congress have to have four blades???? I have a Tuna Valley that is called a two bladed congress tha is similar in design. Maybe I have been wrong??? Let me know

Hi PA,
I didn't mean for the comment to sound like it is incorrect to call these congresses, I just prefer the term swayback pen. I'm probably the one that is wrong... I think it would be acceptable either way. I'm going to go get my copy of Bernard Levines Guide and see what he says.

According to Bernard Levive’s Guide to Knives and Their Values page 190… The “congress” is crescent shaped, usually has squared corners (sometimes rounded), can have 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 blades. Usually the master blade is sheepsfoot. Larger congresses were often called tobacco knives and were created specifically for the American market.
That knife for sure matched Mr. Levine's description of a congress. I am sure the master blade was a sheepfoot before several sharpenings. So... Congress it is!

In honor of the Tour de France, you must be using the French version (Levive)......
It's said that Lincoln had a 6 bladed Congress in his pocket the night he went to Ford's Theatre, only to be shot...
Both Houston Price's, and Ritchie and Stewart's, (hey, wait....that's 3 guys
), books call this a Congress Pen pattern. So there you go....

If that knife IS a R5143 as you say, I can't find it in any of 5 sources or when I Googled that pattern number??? It should have plastic scales (Pyremite) if it's a 5. I've got to admit, they look like bone to me??? R6143 is a 2 bladed Congress Pen in brown bone......but, who knows?

This is exactly why I like being a part of these discussions. You guys are great to look into these things with such depth. I am off to the Queen Knife show this afternoon. I will be thinking of all of you, HA HA A Just kidding. I hope to take some digital photos and post them on the forum. Let's hope that a CASE MFG Warren PA is just waiting for me to show up and buy it.

The last number 3 indicates bone handles, not the first number.

You are correct of course...I was a bit sloppy in my reading and reporting.
The last #3 = bone.
I still can't find an R
5143 in anything I've got on hand...only the R6143 2 bladed Congress, in bone. Any help?

I can't find any Remington folder with a pattern number beginning with the number 5.
