How to categorize and list your knives?

The more knives I get the harder it is to remember them all. AND find them too.
Do most of you keep photos in your computer of each one?

1. What are the FIRST most important things you collectors list your knives as? (Schrade)
2. Ducks Unlimited?
3. Model number (153UH)?
4. Golden Spike 24K Gold+Black length of knife
(I have all this on one line in first Field in that order.)
((Schrade Ducks 153UH Golden Spike 24 Gold+Black))

5. White box+Black Sheath* (to show color of box and if it has a sheath and* tells me cleaned and Ren waxed) in the 2ND field.
6. Cost in 3RD field.
7. Shipping cost in 4TH field (Then I run out of room)
8. Year it was made (would be nice?)
9. Number of Blades?
10. Numbers on blade (pattern)?
11. Numbers like 205 out of 1000?
12. Handle type?
13. Etching on Blade?
14. Etching on handle? (Deer, bear, fox?)
15. What Big box it is in?(I put all my Schrade 153UH in one Big box and mark the box)

I see now I can add cost with shipping cost and get more room. I would still run out of room on one line. When I print it if I have more fields then it all gets messed up?

I use Microsoft Access.
I now have 8 pages of one line INFO and I need more FIELDS.

What are some of your ways to catalogue and locate your knives?
Do you keep a photo of each one?

I am FAR from being an expert but I have a similar setup on my Access DB for my knife collection. When I print mine out I use a form that I defined for input and instead of getting a list as a table (or like an Excel spreadsheet) I get them printed as if they were on the input screen. I get 2 per page and it would be an easy thing to put them into a binder and carry them with you to a knife show or to store offsite for backup purposes.

needbucks; Yes that would be nice to see. I am old and not computer smart. I also think I placed this post in wrong place again. Knife Related Q&A would have been the right one.

The more ideas the better for me.

Here is one more thought I have. The day will come in time my sons or wifey will sell most of my collection. I want it EZ for them to under stand too.

I have been collecting knives for 50+ years and have over 500 . I had the same problem you are talking about. I started trying to keep then in a database. About eight years ago I started writing a Windows program to keep track of them. (I am a retired programmer) I gave up after a year or so and lost interest. About three years ago my youngest son (who also collects knives) started pestering me about finishing the program. I finally gave in to him and between us and quite a few suggestions from CCC forum members we came up with what I consider a good program. You may download it and try it to see if you like it. The total cost if you want to register it is $24.95. You can download it at http://ewillieware.com/. It won't cost anything to try it.

Ok. You asked for it and now ur gonna get it. Don't fall down laughing.

Now a real Microsoft Access person would add drop down boxes for things like Maker, Handle Material, Condition, etc. but I didn't want to take the time. It works for me.

I just keep it real simple. I made a folder for the Bulldog knives and then seperated it in 8 seperate folders. 1st Generation, 2nd Generation, 3rd Generation, 4th Generation, 5th Generation, Anglo Saxons, Customized knives, and Mastodon Ivory. I also put sub-folders in for the 1st Generation, (tobbacco knives), the 3rd generation has a sub-folder for the original Jim Parker Proto's made in 1993 (all have print rather than script and have COA's and some have factory invoices signed by Achim Gronauer). The fifth generation has the 25th anniversary prototypes, Millenium knives, 2005 Prototypes, Warncliffe Whittlers, Presentatiom trappers, and Lewis and Clark Swing Guards for the sub-folders.
Every knife has at least one picture and has a witten description on a word document.
That way it's easy for my wife or kids to know exactly what I have. I guess I could make a spread sheet and have a column with links. That way I could just click on the link to go to that exact knife. Once it is set up, it would be real easy to find any knife I wanted.
I guess I need to do that for the Canal Street knives, the custom handmade knives, and Case knives. So far it has worked quite well. There is a lot of set up time, but once it's done, it works like a charm and it is real easy to find anything I have.

Where is the knife stored? (I have 40 cardboard boxes of knives) Will I have to number the boxes that I store them in too? Reason is I see so may here going right to their knife take photo and add it to a post. You all must have a real good memory or a system to find what you want to show. Some say they have to DIG one out lol

One of the things that I would add would be a location code for which box or display case my knife could be found in.

Incidentally, that first field on the screen is automatically generated by the Access database so it will not have any repeats. I put a small sticker on the boxes with that number where they exist. I keep a sheet of paper with each roll with that number if they are located in the roll. And the pictures I have of my knives are numbered with the same number.
