All About Pocket Knives

These knives are made in Thiers, France by M.C.COGNET. They originated in 1927 for the colonial trade, and the strange handle etch is a Polynesian god. Evidently in later years they had other etches for the African trade, and the knives were enormously popular in north Africa. A couple of sites suggest a connection to the French Foreign Legion. These knives are still in production and mine are new.

This is about as simple a knife as you can find. It is a folded steel frame with a backspring inside and a pinned in carbon steel blade. The frame can be hammered down below the pivot to convert the knife to a fixed blade.
