All About Pocket Knives

The Gunstock pattern is one of my favorites.

They are not easy to find and when you do they are usually worn out or broken. It was a more expensive pattern to buy, and it seems many of the old knife companies did not sell very many. After the late 1930`s the pattern seems to have disappeared from knife companies catalogs. This pattern has class and if you pull one out of your pocket even people that are not into knives will usually comment on what a nice unusual knife it is.

This one is an old Ulster, blade is etched Ulster Brand, ebony handles large shield fancy nickle silver grooved bolsters. Who ever they had putting this one together knew how to make a knife, the fit and finish is of the highest quality. The wood handles are fitted perfectly against the bolsters.

I would like to see more Old Gunstock jacks in this thread!

Nice old knife I like a knife that the spring continue around and fills the gap on the end of the pen blade.

Here is the only one I have:A Jonathan Crookes with the heart and pistol stamp.The handle has had an old repair that looks almost like cutler's cement.

One of my old CATTARAUGUS.

Another CATTARAUGUS whittler with a manicure blade.

Great knives!!! I now have 2 Gunstocks, picked this one up today. Unusual horn handles on an American knife. Pre 1937 Utica Cutlery. I really like the way the spring comes all the way around the knife in the pen slot!!!

Here is a Curtin and Clark. Looks a bit like it may have been made by Utica, judging by the similarities with the Utica posted by Galvanic.

Here is a little Schatt & Morgan gunstock jack I just picked up. The blades are down a little and there is a little blade movement but, all in all, not too bad. This little knife also has the extended backspring on the secondary blade.

It seems all the old ones had the wrap around spring on the pen blade.

A sure sign of quality and extra effort put in by the makers in the old days

Schrade Cut Co, found at the Oregon show last April. Rivet shows in the bolster, but Bernie Levine and several others agree it's original. Quite a crowd of experts at that show!!

Thanks MB. I still like it too... even if there is a possibility that it didn't start out a gunstock shape.

The gunstock is one of my favorite patterns. Here are some of mine:

1. A Van Camp H & I Co from Indianapolis that has seen better days.

2. An A. F. Bannister & Co with brass handles.

3. An A. F. Bannister & Co serpentine gunstock in bone. The color of the bone is faded, but you can still see that it was once dyed blue. So far this is the only vintage knife I've seen with blue bone handles.
