All About Pocket Knives

A few years back I got this knife from Tobyrogers (Arnold). He knew I was a scout leader back then and sent me this beat up old western. I always had plans to redo it somehow, and have had it in various stages of reno since. I finally got the motivation to finish it.



The knife had been through the ringer. The leather handle was all dry rot and loose. I took the whole mess apart.


I did some clean up on the blade and tang, and soldered the guard back on.


Reattached the pommel


Picked some wood scales and started rough fit.


One side glued and rough fit.


Everything together for final finishes.


Rough shape and sand. Almost there.


Finished product. Blade was pretty pitted, so I did some sanding to take the roughness down.


Once again, I don't know what wood this was, just some scales I had in the drawer. I still have to make a sheath for it. It's not perfect, some gaps in the scales and such, and a hole in the pommel I never filled. I can just imagine some scout using the knife, as was intended, and it being in "scout" shape.

It was a sad day when I heard of Arnold's passing, and though I didn't know him that well, he was a good friend to all. When I look at the knife, I think of him, so that's pretty cool.

I am sure he would be honored.

I don't remember him posting a lot here, mostly on the Schrade Forum at B.F.

How did you get the pommel pins out, drill them or pound them out?
They can be tough.

Both...I drilled them in the center with a smaller bit, then I used a punch to push them through.

You're right, it was tough.

I probably didn't do the knife the justice it deserved, but I saved it from the scrap heap.
