All About Pocket Knives

Looks like an original knife , however it may have possibly been rehandled . These were given out by Spratt's dogfood producers and were not always made to the highest standards . Case and Remington made a better grade of this style pattern . This one has a market value of $50 - $80 IMO .

Would love to see a pic of the back of this tool with the blades open. Also, why would the pins be exposed ? That would seem uncommon for a English knife made in this time frame. mikek

Fifth photo from the top, or the left, is the back of the knife with the blades open. Expand the photos. That fifth shot shows only one tang stamp.

I think the bone looks a little better than on most of these that I've seen, but the jigging pattern is consistent.

The pins are (almost?) always prominent on these "Spratt's" knives. Don't know why. Maybe because the action of stripping tangles and dead hair out of a dog's coat were thought to be overly stressful on the blade-to-knife junction and making the pins headed like that provided a little more strength.

The knife might have been buffed up a bit.

It's just about the best one I've ever seen.

No, they do not hold a candle to the Remingtons.

I've been looking at the knives for a couple of years, as I have acquaintances/in-laws named Spratt that have a Cairn Terrier. I thought it would be neat to them a knife with their name on it, and to groom the dog.

Why haven't I bought them one in all this time? They always exceed what I'm willing to pay for that particular gesture.

Charlie, just to clarify, I wanted to see a pic of the backspring/blade junction. Your thought's on the pins I'am sure are valid. At first I was thinking a possible home made job. Thanks for the good info, its why I come here mikek

I don’t know much about them. My understanding is that Spratts is/was a brand of dog food in England, and you could get a knife by saving coupons from dog food packages. A similar one I have is stamped TITAN which was a competitor of Spratts. As usual a quick search of AAPK will find some more info viewtopic.php?t=65966
