All About Pocket Knives

What do you actually do with your knife? Over 90% of the use of my knives is for
opening packages, mostly for the kids' toys. How about everybody else? The last
thing I used my SAK Cadet for was opening the blister pack on my Case Sodbuster Jr.

1 I'm a hunter/fisherman so I use my knife for gutting, skinning, filleting and other such use's.
2 I'm the fastest present/package opener in my family (next to my brother, but he cheats).
3 I use my knife to clean my finger nails, get splinters out, and cut loose strings.
4 I use my knives in the kitchen all the time, cleaning produce, cutting bags open, and peeling things.
5 I use my knives to remember loved ones and to recall a great time in the field.
6 I'm a cheaply payed farm hand, ooops, I mean Handler in the field of agriculture. Anyways,I cant' count the times I use a knife at work, but I use it a lot.

I'm sure I'll think of more reasons I use my knives.

If its in my pocket I usually just use to sharpen soapstone or open the mail. But I keep a bigger knife in my center console of my truck for the heavier cutting.
But if I have plans on actually doing something, like gutting something after I ruin its day. I carry a knife that will do the purpose.

I recently cut a metal splinter(the worst type...they work themselves in instead of out, unlike wood ones) with a china made rough rider mini canoe.

Simply as needed. I've had aknife in my pocket since before I started school! Big Texas uncle gave me my first knife outside a rodeo when I was 3yr. Wish I stil had it.

I don't really understand how some people can claim that they do not need a knife. When used to having one in your pocket, it soon becomes a much used tool for all sorts of tasks during the day.
My favorite "knife moments" are those in the great outdoors, doing such things as preparing a meal or making a campfire.

I feel naked when I don't have a knife in my pocket. I'd just as soon leave my cell phone home as to go off without my knife.

I also pat my pockets when I leave the house to make sure I have the 4 essentials - keys, wallet, cell phone, and pocket knife.

I grew up in the country - hunting and fishing - and always carried a knife. Now that I am a candy-ass office worker (I work from home), I use my knife to open mail and boxes, clean fingernails, and odd jobs around the house.

I use my knife mostly for fending off grizzly bears and ninja warriors.

When I'm not doing that I open envelopes and packaging , clean and trim my nails and gallantly remove ravels from my wife's new clothing. I do have knives I use when cleaning game I have harvested or fish I have caught, but that is less frequent as time goes by.

Phil, don't you mean ninja grizzly bear warriors?
Don't worry about not fishing much, it's a waste of time and money that you could spend on knives.

I used my knife to cut the tape off of some fireworks we shot off tonight.
I use my knife to shave the hair off my arms, but now it won't grow back.

Keep my clip blade as pointed as possible to dig out splinters (which seem to be attracted to me on a daily basis).

I like most here use my knife like a pry bar, Tooth pick, screwdriver, hammer, peeler, and a scrapper. Thats why they have more than one blade right....

Sounds like I use a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife RED EXECUTIVE.

Yup pers she is on my key chain.

It is fun going to a knife show and ask guys what they have in their pocket. Most do not even have a knife, and 65% of the ones that do have a knife. It is a Swiss Army knife.

I cut the heads off of some old toy army men that were looking at me in the wrong way!!

There always is a knife in my pocket, I use it to open packages, cleaning my nails, cutting a point on a match to get the "spare meat " away from between my teeth and for antother 100 things.
I am so very used to have a knife in my pocket that its use is a second nature to me- it is just like with a watch; if you are not wearing it for some reason, you find out how many times you look at your wrist.
If the knife is not there, i am aware how many times my hand slides into my pocket, just to find out, the knife is not in it.
When I was in technical school, the school regulations were, one had to carry a pocket knife to do things like sharpen a pencil etc., nowadays the school regulations do forbid carrying a pocket knife, world has changed.

I usually carry 3 knives minimum at all times.
I can't count the number of times per day I use my knife, but some usages would include:
To open mail, open a box, cut up said box to recycle, cut string or rope, clean under my fingernails, cut off a hangnail, trim my fingernails, cut a label out of a new shirt or dress for my wife.......she doesn't like the labels, they tickle her neck.
I use my knife to trim handle material for a knife I am fixing, of to cut leather to repair a sheath. I use it to open shrink wrapped packages of drills, etc, etc.

How many times per day I use my knife & what I cut with it varies from day to day and with what I am doing.
Wednesday I hope to use it while fishing with my nephew.

What Dale and everybody else said, but also cutting bushes off my Schnauzer (and don't take that wrong ), leaving it at the gut pile and then driving 60 miles back to get it, cutting willow poles for catfishing. Also carry 2 to 3 more knives, silver dollar from 1880, handkerchief, 2 pens, 2 sets of keys, billfold, comb (bet some of you wished you could still need one, hehehe), leather belt, cell phone, and sometimes GPS, rangefinder, belt knife (custom stag by Dale), and another pound or two of various rubbish, including a poop bag for the Schnauzer (see above). At this point I sometimes add suspenders.

In the month of June:
--opened packages, mail, etc
--cleaned, trimmed fingernails
--touched up a spot I missed when shaving
--stripped wires (cut a couple too)
--scraped battery terminal on the tractor
--general carpentry and cabinetmaking layout
--cut string, rope, baling twine
--castrated a goat and six little pigs
--dressed out a larger pig for a barbecue (I did use a hatchet to split him though)
--cut leather, patched a saddle for one of the kids
--taught a nephew how to make an antler powder measure for his ML rifle
--cut and peeled about a thousand willow sticks for a friend (his wife makes willow lazy-backs, like a Native-American chaise lounge)
--helped another batch of Cub Scouts practice firemaking
--dug a splinter out of my hand
--dug a couple locust thorns out of my foot (Nikes won't stop 'em)
--misc. gardening tasks
--poked holes in the edge of a cowhide so I could stretch it (should have done that before freezing the hide)
--sharpened my pocket knives a few times . . .

Just curious here Cup. Did you use an official stockman with the spey blade to do that job?

Ol' country boy myself, but I seem to remember using a razor blade fer that job..... too poor fer a stockman.

Actually, I did use a stockman, though in the past i often used a trapper. Having discovered the Camillus 69 delux stockman thanks to a thread started by Cbnutt in the Camillus forum, I've adopted it as my general-purpose pocket knife. It avoids all of my dislikes about the stockman pattern. The turkish clip and sheepsfoot blades sit low, so there is no problem with pressure on the nerves in my hand, and it fits my hand well. Until I find a similar knife the size of an 858OT, I'll probably stick with this one.

Honestly, I never thought anything would displace my Schrade 194OT, but the except for the lack of a lock, the Camillus 69 has it beat--so much so that I've acquired 5 of them, along with a Schrade 861 and a 61OT. Both of those are rather unusual as well.

Except for lack of liner milling, the 861 is a 1:1 clone of the Camillus 69, right down to pin placement. Since I have a couple of Camillus 69s without milling, I guess it isn't surprising that Camillus might have made them for Schrade at some point.

The 61OT is pinned!?! At least, I can see a pin on one of the bolsters. It should be a Swinden key knife, shouldn't it? Ah, the mysteries that are Schrade . . .

While neither are pristine, I've set them aside in favor of the Camillus versions. Much easier to find, and for less $$$.

Sorry for the digression, back to the knife used. I've got my EDC and backup 69-pattern stockmans are both ground at about 25 degrees on the clip blade, 20 degrees on the sheepsfoot, and flat-ground on the spey blade. An old friend (actually my grade school principal) taught me this as a kid, but until now I could never find a stockman I liked enough. The spey blade worked very well, and was sharp enough that there was little bleeding.
