help with identification

I seriously do not think this is a valuable collector's item. I'm just trying to ID this. This was my grandfather's knife. He bought it a very long time ago '40's or earlier. It looks like some crazy knock-off too me. The handle almost looks like a wooden cabinet handle covered with a type of rubberized coating. The blade is actually in much better shape than the photo shows - it is all chrome. The camera flash did weird things. It has "Cattaraugus" stamped in the blade, no serials numbers at all. At first I thought he just put the handle on himself, but it should be noted the strap on the sheath fits perfectly around the large handle so that seems unlikely.

Anyway if anyone could provide any insight on this it would be much appreciated.
