All About Pocket Knives

What was everybody first knives. For me it was a old timer jack I got it along time ago. But I know I had more before I got it. its a 330t

mine was a boy scout knife. i order when i was in boy scouts. hum...it was last year.. hehe. i still have it. after all this time i still remeber ordering it. or may be had to sale something to get it. to long. thanks denny

I guess I got bitten by the bug when I found my very first knife...
By «found», I really mean found – I was digging a hole and there it was!
I don't remember exactly how old I was, but probably around four or five years.
As most young boys at that age, I was often hunting for all kinds of treasures to be found on the ground and elsewhere. Nice little stones, old bottle caps, pieces of old toys and other such valuable items to put in your pockets.
One day I was digging a small hole in the ground with a spoon and I struck a piece of metal down there. It turned out to be a knife blade! I was extremely thrilled by the find. Now I had my very own knife, and with a magnificent tool like that I would be able to conquer the world for sure.!!! At least my little world...
Well, this fantastic treasure knife of mine was not a exactly a valuable old Case or a historical artefact from medieval times. In fact it was an old butter knife with no handle, just the tang... But that didn't really matter. It was a knife and it was mine!
My mother is still alive and from time to time, when a knife is mentioned, she will chuckle and tell the story of when I literally dug up my first knife and how excited I was.
It was probably a good thing that I did not find a big chef's knife or something like that. It was decided that the blunt, dull thing was not dangerous and I was allowed to keep it.
I have faint memories of exciting whittling sessions with my first knife – meaning that I was able to scrape some bark of with it.

Having that knife today would have been great, but I guess I lost interest quite soon after I was allowed to have my first pocket knife, and my fantastic archaeological find probably got thrown away before I started school...

Although I can't know for sure, it is highly probable that some sort of germ or knife bug was buried along with that butter knife, because I never really recovered and I have had to live with this mysterious chronic disease ever since...

Mine was a cheap Colonial, white plastic handled stockman.
The year was 1957.
Still have it.
It's one of my true keepers.

My first knife was from a box of cracker jacks that the King of Sheba gave me to fight with in the Mexican-Canadian War in the late 1700's. I was just a young buck then and I used it to slay Rambo and the Terminator.

Because I don't remember. What ever it was, the odds are I probably lost it the same day!

Well, the first one I can recall was a cheap Barlow-style knife with hollow bolsters and plastic scales. Can't remember what brand or where I got it, but I do remember that it didn't last too long with me throwing it at everything under the sun and trying make it stick. For some reason, common sense wasn't very common for me back then.

I blame Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone for my proclivity for throwing my early knives... Dad was right, TV does screw up kids lol

Mine was a cheap barlow also. I can remember my grandad sharpening it up real good for me and then I got the great idea of seeing if I could throw it and stick it in a tree trunk.(I watched Davy Crockett also) Anyway I grabbed it by the blade and flung it at the tree trunk and damn near cut my finger off. I can remember watching western movies after that and trying to figure out how the indians and indian fighters could throw their knives without defingering themselves.

I don't remember throwing my pocket knives (at least not much), but my first couple of fixed blades saw a lot of air time...
One time a friend and I were throwing our knives at a tree and he managed to get his knife to stick not in the trunk of the tree, but in the wooden handle of my Mora knife! I was afraid the handle would split. The knife was scarred for life, but it survived and I kept on throwing it.

Here is my first knife - still have it. I was about 7 years old, we were camping on vacation in the mountains in Terrero, NM in the summer of 1968. We stopped at a little souvenir store, and my dad asked me what I wanted.....I remember peering through the glass counter/case, and pointing at the knife, knowing that my dad would never agree to buy me a real knife! I was shocked when he said, "Sure"! (I think he might have had a beer or two). About the time he finished paying for it, my mom walked up. I remember there were some unhappy words exchanged.

Of course, she was the one who took me to the emergency room when I cut my lip with it a month or so later. Still have the scar.

The handle was broken when I was a teenager by throwing it at the wooden door of our workshop, trying to make it stick (just like in all those old Western movies).

These are common knives - made by Imperial or Colonial, I think (mine isn't marked). They go for $5 or $6 on e-bay. I wouldn't sell mine for $1000.

Looks like a nice boy's knife!
And like a not too distant relative of my first fixed blade sheath knife, the Swedish Mora Boy Scout knife! I cut my fingers several times with it, but never the lip..!

How I cut my lip.....my next door neighbor (my age) had a big Tonka Toy jeep. We had some kite string - we tied one end around the front bumper of the jeep, and tied the other end around his back belt loop. He ran up and down the street several times, pulling the jeep. When he got tired, he wanted the jeep un-tied from his pants, of course. I ran into the house to get my new knife, and squatted down behind him to cut the string off his belt loop. Of course, I stuck the knife through the string and PULLED TOWARD MY FACE! When the string gave way, the knife struck me in the top lip.

.....and that was the day I learned to always cut away from myself.

I guess that's what they call Learning the Hard Way...
My first fixed blade taught me that whittling while walking is not a great idea. Sliced the tip of my left index finger right off.
I still do not have a normal looking fingerprint from that finger...

Makes ya wonder how many of those cheap barlows were some little kids first knive--i got at least a dozen that i've grabbed up at rummage sales over the years for a few cents--those and the little novaltie's that have some tourist traps name on the handle and probably half of em have nicked somebody under the age of ten and been confiscated by the kids mother thirty + years ago

I don't have a clue what my first knife was but I still have the scars it gave me.

My First knife is the Schrade deerslayer. My mom bought it for my dad there first year of marrige. He used it to clean all of his deer with. He passed it on to me and i still use it. When my son is a little older ( he's only six weeks old) he be the next in line.

Mine was a Rich. Herder sodbuster with a wooden handle.
I got it from my father and had it until I lost it on an Army field training.
Despite the fact , a brand new army knife was issued to me I continued to use that knife I was used to for so many years

My first knife was a small metal handled case. My dad bought it for me and a broun leather sheath that fit it perfectly. I was 4 or 5 years old then. Shortly after i got it, we were on vacation at my hgrand parents house in North Carolina and I damn near cut my finger off with it. Been hooked on knives ever since. Only now my interest in knives is bigger and have much more expensive taste in knives. Still have the knife and the scar.

Old Timers have always been about since I was a young boy in Australia.
I still use My old Schrade 881 ever day, I have had since the 1960's
My last Knife my friend in the US sent over just last week, after email after email to him - it arived: THANK YOU JIM old Mate. KG
