The 1970 10 dot case knives have really shot up in value this past year or so. My question is does anyone know how difficult it is to add a dot to a 9 dot knive or 2 dots to a 8 dot knife without anyone being able to tell it was done.

I would say, out of pure ignorance, that it would be a tall order just to get the right tool to make a typical fraudlent impression. But I'm also sure there are those who would go to such extremes for so little gain. It's always nice to have a strong magnifying eye piece to use if you can. Your sort of out in deep water with e-bay type situations.

Fake 10 dots made from later 70's Case knives are, unfortunately, out there. With magnification the difference is usually easy to tell. I'm at that point that I don't trust anyone without close inspection of my own.

That can be a problem buying on eBay;

I am not at the same level of distrust; as Paul yet. Just picked this one up at a good price; I am confident that it's legit.

It just seems to me that it would be easier to add 1 dot to a knife tang than it would be to stamp a tang with a fake Case tested stamp. Some of the 10 dot knives go for 30 to 40% more than the other dot knives so there would be money to be made if you did enough knives. I haven't had the opportunity to compare a fake dot with a legit dot so I probably wouldn't know the difference.
If someone had a pic of a fake 10 dot that they could post it would sure help someone like me. At least I would know what to look for.

I might be wrong but didnt Case imprint the tang when the seel was hot? If you tap a dot into the tang with a tool it should leave a raised edge around the imprint that can be seen with a good glass.
Anyone know if this is so?

No.
A lot of people think that tang stampings are made when the blade has been heated up. Not true. Never has been true. The tangs are stamped when the steel is in its annealed state prior to heat treating so the stamp does go deep into the metal.

Great question Gino but I dont think the stamps were made when the steel was hot.

Thank's for confirming Steve

I was a little late.
I do think It is possible to Re-stamp dots onto tangs though.

Just to add, I would think that if someone tried to add a dot on a tang where the blade has been heat treated (even though the tangs are annealed they are not back to the original state of the steel in its rolled form, at least I do not believe so) then the dot would not have the black color inside since the steel was not fully soft. I could be wrong.

Counterfeiters have been adding dots for years. They have been known to add black paint to a clean post factory stamp, which will rub off with a little effort, but can last long enough to unload it. It's usually hard to get 'em spaced just right though with dots and you can usually tell with a good loupe

With the right equipment (which most "dot adders" don't bother to use) it can be done with perfect spacing and alignment. I'm not revealing what that equipment is for obvious reasons, but Knifeaholic is correct in that the added dot(s) would be clean and shiney inside and not rough (and dark) if felt with a needle or pin which is the true test to see if something was cold stamped or stamped before the final heat treating process like it is done at the factory.

You might be able to take one dot away to try to pass it off as a '65 - '69 knife but the difference in the knives themselves would be obvious to anyone with even a little experience looking at Case knives.

1970-1974, Have an oval on their shield, and are bone scales. Maybe this can help ID.

Wow, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the ethical issue here. Just ask yourself, if you bought a knife and find out that the tang has been manipulated how would you like it? For a few bucks you cheat another man, and harden your on conscience.

Lying, deceitful, unconscionable people exist, may God forgive their larcenous souls, and they’d rather climb a greased pole and alter a tang stamp than stand on flat ground and make an honest living.
They could not possibly care less what their actions do to their own conscience, as they have none.
Cannot believe I never contributed to this twelve year old thread, given that I started my knife collecting endeavors in 1988, by buying 1970 Case Ten Dot knives. I had thirty-six, I believe, when I sold them all to Jim Sargent.
Someone better versed in Case knowledge can correct me, but I don’t think it’s possible to creat a passable 1970 Ten Dot by adding a single dot to an actual Nine Dot knife. The dots are centered on the Case legend and adding a dot will make it off center. Adding two dots to an actual Eight Dot, however, is possible.
You get much farther out from 1970 than that and there are other give-away factors involved.
And, as stated above, having the correct tool, placing it exactly where it should be and striking it with the correct amount of force the first time, to create that perfectly placed, perfectly shaped dot of the perfect depth?
That’s actually quite a tall order.

I agree with Charlie. And I’ll add that in my years of collecting Case pocket knives I can’t recall seeing many altered by adding dots. Those relatively few I have seen were readily obvious, mat least to a diligent eye.
FLgatorTX, welcome to AAPK. Your comments about the character of humans is both refreshing and alarmingly naive. In case you haven’t found it yet there is an entire subforum here focused on the extent to which our fellow man can, and will, go to deceive and defraud others.

I think the most often encountered controversy over ten dot/nine dot knives occurs with the 6111 1/2 and 5111 1/2 folding guard knives. Not sure they were called “Cheetas” in 1970.
The folding guard, even on a genuine 1970 Ten Dot tends to cover a dot, making it impossible to count them.

I actually have a fake 10 dot Large stockman the only thing on the knife that came from case is the main blade and shield. (I got it at a flea market) the guy that had it was a buddy and he asked my thoughts on it and in about ten seconds I told him it wasn’t legit. He gave it to me. There was a dot or two added to main blade(been a long time since I looked at it) they are out there.

Is there a significance to the oval inside the shield? I mean, even some new knives have the word CASE inside an oval border.

Are you referring to the composition shield? If so maybe this will help.
