Hey guys,

I bought this knife some time back and cannot find it in any reference. It is supposed be around the era of 1912? It looks like it is in too good of condition and although I cannot find anything that is a dead give away as if were counterfeit, its a highly suspected piece in my collection. It does not show in the pics but there is file work across the brass liners on both sides. It also has the stamping on the file blade that runs parallel to the blade.

It ok to tell the truth, I've already written it off.

I agree. Is that a hollw pin on the one end -like the old Ideal knives had?
Handle reminds me of the old Ideal knives a little.

Did you read THE CASE MANUFACTURING COMPANY on page 49 of Goins which has c. 1908 - 1911.

Also look at the lobster knives on page 100 & page 138 of Sargent's 6th.

They sure look like very close relatives to yours.

Do you think that looks like a 100 year old tang marking?
I might /prob be wrong but it doesnt look right to me.
Not disputing Case Man. Co. just the tang marking.

Gino,

Actually the pin is not hollow, it acually is just a tad recessed. I wish I could show better pics but my Camera USB is hiding.

Perhaps what bothers me most is when looking at the tang with my 10X lighted loupe, the stamping appears to be cold struck. I can see some material pushed up around the contour of the letters.

Pen, Yes I have seen the pic in sargents pg. 138. This knife is 1/2 larger and although both blades and the knife are very similar they are quite different. Mine does not have the bail, Sargents has no bolsters, Both my blades are different, and the differnce in the length between the two.

This knife also has some nice file work running about 2:00 from perpendicular on all liners, a nice touch.

I guess when I purchased it I was hopeful ::tear::

Look at the knife on page 100 - it is the right length. (One less pin with no bolsters.)

Bonehead have you ever seen a Case MFG. Co. stamp that was correct before?

Also, wouldn't you exspect a Case MFG. Co. knife to be similar but different than a Case & Sons from the same era?

Pen,

No and yes ::tounge::

No, I have no idea what they did back then. Maybe cold struck was the process. I do know that from what I read, Case Brothers established Case Man. Co. but lost it via not paying the 1st mortage payment. A group of talented folks in the same area bought the establishment and made knives on contract for the Case Brothers for a few years. This knife would have been one of them.

Yes, You think like I do, We do not see alot of Case MFG. posts. And Since we do not have any real good references, I do believe that this Case Mfg. may have merit since it very close to what I have seen. Your right about the length on PG 100, its the same. It is very similar ::shrug::

Your gonna keep me wondering ::nod:: . many I can write off with a little research, but I really can't do this one like that yet.
