All About Pocket Knives

Got this one in the mail yesterday. The dark spot on the shield is a reflection. It is my understanding that it was made in Germany for Jim Parker back in the 1990's. I guess he had rights to the Shapleigh's name. It's a pretty one with beautiful bone handles. I have a few more of them and they are all great quality knives.

Fellers let me ask you a question. Now everyone knows that Parker pulled some hand is quicker than the eye moves, but excluding Parker totally from the question, would you have bought your knives (if you could hold them in hand to inspect) if they had a different name on the tang and had the word Germany stamped on the blade? I've seen knives like those posted here, and others like the C.Platts & Sons marked knives among many other well known old Case related brand names that Parker "borrowed" the names from at any given time. Some of those knives Parker had made are put together well and aren't bad looking knives. The untrue history and story told as a sale pitch to sale the repro knives was the real problem with the knives. If I found one with a name like Repro Cutlery (for example) and the word Germany on the tang I would have bought it if it had good fit & finish, and good materials used to make it. I guess the temptation of selling one for $300 and up was just too much to resisted, and an ideal of selling one with an honest description and it's own brand name for $40 to $60 wasn't fast, nor enough for the sellers. Anyone have any thoughts or comments about the German repro's knives with the different old well known name brands on them that Parker had made up? I'm only talking about the repro knives, nothing about Parker.

What I always thing about is someone a hundred years for now trying to figure out Repros or Vintage.

I knew what the knives were when I bought them and I bought them for what they are.... A nice German made pocket knife with an excellent fit and finish. I get a lot of enjoyment from them and will probably buy more if the price is right. The word Germany is stamped on the tang.

What do you think of the new knives that Case is making that say Crandall, C.Platts, or Standard on them. How about the new Schatt & Morgan and Robeson?

James, I have had several of the Shapleigh's knives in different patterns. I find they are well made knives; dosen't matter if they were (warehouse finds/or put together with old parts) or not; though I kind of doubt the sales pitch. I do have a 1990s Standard Knife Co. e-toe made by Queen; can't find anything wrong with it either. Not really a stamp collector but of a quality made knife; in patterns that I like. If I run across a Tested or W.R.Case e-toe now that's a different story.

As for the Schatt&Morgan reproductions; I find it hard to believe that the older made ones were of any better quality. One of the stores here at AAPK; has one of the S&M large pearl congress; with signature bolsters. IMO that is one sweet; hand full of knife.
