All About Pocket Knives

Does anyone have any info or an opinion on the current Utica Cutlery line of pocket knives? They are made in the USA and reasonably priced. They don't seem to be widely available. I didn't know they were still producing knives...

What's not to like? I'm really surprised that there is not more collector intrest in Utica knives. They are, as you say, a well made U.S. made brand, they use quality materials, and they are reasonably priced.
I just don't ever see them for sale locally anywhere and can't help but wonder about their marketing strategy.
BTW those are two fine looking knives you posted vikingdog.

Thanks for the replies Phil and John. I like the look of these knives and I think I'll try one. The only place I have found them is Knifecenter.com. The Stockman is $32 and the Barlow as pictured below is only $27. Sounds too good to be true? I can't imagine why these knives aren't more readily available unless it's a new line.

The Barlows show "This is a delayed new product--pre-order only at this time." This is Utica Cutlery's 100th anniversary year.

That's a great tip, Vikingdog. I just went to Knife Center and ordered a trapper and a rope knife. Looks like Utica is the last American manufacturer standing who still makes rope knives and electricians knives. They also have a hawksbill pruner/carpet/linoleum knife and a coping knife for others who like classic work knives. Their site is well worth a look.

I downloaded there catalog.......really nice knives.

I think they look very nice!
I don't have any Uticas, but if they are made as well as they look, they certainly deserve success.

The John Primble knives listed at KnifeCenter are made by Utica. If you study the tooling and details you will see that the Primble knives are identical to the Kutmaster knives.

BTW, some amazing good values on those Kutmasters....a USA made full size bone handled trapper in 1095 steel for under $30!!!

The Utica's and the Primbles are nice, but for the money. The Utica's are by far the better deal.

From the Kutmaster website: "The Utica Cutlery Company was founded in 1910 by a group of prominent Utica businessmen. It was felt that a metal working industry would create employment and bring economic balance to the area. The primary industry in Utica at the time was textile manufacturing.

The original location for the company was 820 Noyes Street. Through the years, several major additions were made to the building, but the address remains the same. The current size of the factory and office is approximately 100,000 square feet.

Does anyone have an idea what other knife manufacturers have been in business for 100 years, other than Case?

I live about an hour from their factory and used to stop in every chance I could on passing to check out their retail store. Could always pick up some overruns or kitchen knives real cheap. A couple years ago I was working in the area and stopped by,only to find the retail shop was closed up. I always liked "local" knives, which for me were Schrade, Camillus, Utica and Kabar.I was under the impression that they had all but shut down any locally made knives other than maybe kitchen cutlery and had all their other knives made in Asia.Looks like I may have been wrong...maybe they're filling the vacuum left by Camillus' demise.

I got home from work just before dark and found a package in the mailbox. Inside were two new Utica knives - a trapper and a rope knife. It was too dark to do any serious photography, but I did get one shot to show tonight. If I get home at a reasonable hour tomorrow, I'll take some more.

While I'm not going to claim these knives are the equal of a Queen, a Case, or even a Bear, they're decent knives. There's a nice etch on the main blade of the trapper, and the rope knife has a powerful snap. The trapper is handled in the standard laminated "Parkerwood" that you see on Bears. The rope knife handle is "woodgrain plastic", like what Camillus used on a lot of their work knives in the later days. The blades are stainless steel and reasonably sharp right out of the box (out of the bag for the rope knife - they are packaged wrapped in oiled paper in a plastic bag). I'll definitely be buying some more of these for users and gifts. I like to start young people into the knife carrying habit by giving them a serviceable, good-looking American made knife, and these will fill the ticket. And yes, the packaging leaves no doubt that these knives are MADE IN USA.

Hey Trail, thanks for the update and photo. The response I received from my e-mail to the website indicated that Utica knives are only available at Knifecenter.com unless you live in upper New York State where they are available in some stores.

"a serviceable, good-looking American made knife" and for the reasonable prices they ask that's a pretty good deal. A good user and EDC, just what they're meant to be. A nice tool, not a collectors item. I'm waiting for the green bone barlow to be in stock and I'll buy one. It looks like a beautiful knife. I may have to get that green serpentine too.
