Alpha Hunter, Alpha Dorado, folding Kalinga... questions

I'm considering one of these 3 as my next folder. Does anyone know how long these have been around. I usually like to find something 10 to 20 yrs old, but when I look these up on auction / sale sites, I do not see many used ones.

If anyone owns any of these, and has any opinions / recommendations / reviews, please share.

Here is mine. It is a great carry piece. With the unique design of the sheath, some people have confused it with a cel phone case. This one has the 154-CM blade, and it is a cutting fool. ::tu::

That is interesting, Luis. I was looking at the SMKW website, and comparing the steels used in these 3 kinves.

While the cheaper versions are all 420 HC, the rosewood scale versions are as follows, according to SMKW's site:

Alpha Dorado: ATS-34
folding Alpha Hunter: 154CM
folding Kalinga: S30V

Useem's Alpla Dorado must be older, with 154CM, and Buck must have changed to ATS-34 somewhere along the line.

Does anyone know the difference in these 3 steels enough to compare/evaluate?

UPDATE: I just checked the Buck website, and the Alpha Dorado is still listed as 154CM, so I guess SMKW's website had that one wrong. I also found a good comparison of the different steels on the Buck site.

Thx,

JP

As far as i know, the ATS-34 and 154-CM are the same steel, just different names from 2 different manufacturers.

IF I remember rightly, ATS-34 is the Japanese version of 154CM.

Either way, IT'S GOOD STOOF!!!!

I'm no expert, but I've also often seen ATS-34 being considered to be the Japanese equivalent of 154CM.

JP,
Personally I would probably prefer the Alpha Dorado over the Folding Alpha Hunter, provided the Dorado is big enough for your needs. But I like them both! The Folding Kalinga Pro would be no 3 on my list...

Yep, I'm definitely leaning toward the Dorado. I like the size, the look, and the price..... and everyone I talk to seems to think that steel is great.

I'll bet one with some exotic custom scales would look sweet. May be a good job for MM.

Thanks a million Luis. The Dorado pictured above (and below) is now in my possession. A wonderful piece for sure. I won't be trading this one off.
