Here's some pics of my latest addition to the growing fish knife collection. These Neft Safety Knives are fairly rare in their normal blade form but ones like this one with the serrated blade back are scarcer yet and I was tickled to pick one up. 5 3/8" closed, 9 1/2" open. It does have a faint etch that says "Fish Knife" but it was hard to get a good scan of it. I need to some more cleanup to it but not a lot. Like other collectors I like to show off my goodies. Enjoy!!

Wow, that is an interesting knife!

I have a book that says there were eight different patterns of interchangable blades offered for the Neft Safety Nife. (Goins ) It also says the knife was made in several different sizes.

Is the blade in your knife removable? Sounds like something similar to those Nagle blades.

I am also wondering how the knife opens. Does the little piece at the bolster work like the flippers on some of the modern day tactical style knives to open the blade?

I would like to know more if you have any further information.

Thank you.

GREAT SCORE!!!!
A friend of mine gave me one of the knives awhile back but the blade was missing. If you know of anyone that has a blade they would like to sell I have a mint condition handle to fit it.

I really like the Neft Safety Knives. They also made a really nice mottled orange/brown handle material.

Here's an Ebay auction of a Neft knife with the mottled handle material. The knife is in poor condition, i.e. missing a top bolster, blade has a bad belly and is pitted, etc. But, you've got to love those handles.

These things turn up on Ebay with some regularity. If nice, they always sell high. A near-mint example with the mottled handle sold in excess of six hundred dollars a year or two ago.

I saw a single blade, no handle, on Ebay a while back.

I think a display of the variations and available blades would be really interesting.

Someone asked how they work: The two halves of the knife's frame are hinged at the butt end. One unlocks the frame halves at the blade end, opens it up to access the blade, then lifts and pivots the blade into position, either opened or closed. When the blade is open and the knife closed and locked, it's in the "safe" mode, and the blade will not close during use, hence "Safety Knife". Notice the tang of the knife. It's a rectangle. The bolstered portion of the knife's frame fits snugly onto that rectangle and when locked shut, the blade should not wobble or have much play to it.

The blades can be changed and there were several blade shapes available.

Did the knives come in two sizes? Really neat if that is so.

I have only seen the knife in this size and only with a regular clip blade or this one with the fish scaler back with the scaler back being the only difference between the blades. I haven't seen one with a spear blade but it sounds reasonable. The handle folds out forward on the shield side and the shield itself controls the lock for the handle folding out and the handle is spring-loaded and it pops free when the shield is pulled toward the lower end. I bought the knife off ebay with an offer for an offline sale. Here is the link to the listing it came from and you can see the amount of cleanup and rust control that I did. Eric
