All About Pocket Knives

This is Mossdancer pics and knife(with permission from Mossdancer). I also have a knife IDENTICAL to his, for comparison for everyone to enjoy. I was told my knife to have buffalo horn handles but I cannot tell the difference between buffalo horn and tortoise, but after seeing mossdancer knife, I am thinking my knife to have the same handle material(anyone know to check this difference??)

I also wanted to add that the small blades on my Northfield are stamped--Northfield(curved) K N. Co

When held up to light on edge the handles of Tortoise Shell will be translucent.

Buffalo horn will not be translucent, and will have a woodgrain type texture to it.

Moss`s knife is gold backed, so that the clear parts of the T-shell will be highlighted and look more attractive.

Not all Tortoise is gold backed, because some of it is a solid dark color and does not have the clear spots in it. If yours is smooth without any grain, and translucent it is T-shell.

Thank you Miller bro's for the detailed expalanation. After closer examination, these are tort handles, very translucent. What was confusing, is the light silver color I was seeing was under through the tort handles and was the liner of the knife. Mine is definetely not GOLD BACKED. Most horn handles I have seen, have that hint of silver or whiteness throughout the horn, it was an optical illusion . Thanks for helping me figure this out. Thx Mark

I am a big fan of goldstone and glitter knives--As soon as I grab a few more, I will be posting a new topic for glitter knives. I buy Glitter knives(if anyone has any old ones for sale-LET ME KNOW) for my 11 year old daughter and she will have a nice small collection of them hanging in her room when I am done--she is waiting patiently with me to post them on AAPK. thx Mark

Moss:That handle on the HSB is an early celluloid.I have an early Camillus 4 line coffin handled pen with the exact same material for scales.Couldn't get it to photograph right.

Hmm.....I always thought mine had been " tipped ", but that other one seems to have an odd profile at the tip also. The swedge doesn't look like it runs out to the end of the blade.

My imagination, or an illusion of the photo ?

Mine is still packed in the depths of a closet somewhere, so I can't easily dig it out for another look.

What say you all ?

Re-looking at the picture you posted I believe the tip of yours has been modified a bit.Here are a couple of close-ups of the tip of mine and the stamp which is a bit different.What I thought was unusual is the swedge runs all the way to the tang and that is usually found on mostly pre-1900 knives.

That's a great knife. It has nice full blades & clear tang stamps. Thanks for sharing it!

Love the swell center on the 1st post. GEC is now making one that is very similar to that, but for the blade configuration.

Where were the original Northfield knives made, BTW?

I'm ashamed to say I have the book, but have not taken the time to read it yet. I included it with my 1st GEC order a little over a month ago. I'm hooked on the brand and do look forward to reading it. I've only thumbed through it thus far, mostly looking up production numbers for GEC knives.

Rattlesnake, here's one similar to the one you posted. It's a two blade in ivory with the name Clara inscribed on the shield. I think not having UN-X-LD on the mark puts these before 1876. Slim.
