All About Pocket Knives

Well, GEC has brought forth their first Lockback. The pattern seems to be based on the Remington Bullet (complete with Thong Hole). I have heard that there will be two sizes, the first to arrive is the Mini - which is still plenty large enough at 3 7/8" closed.

I will be buying 2 or 3 of them for sure.

One thing I would have liked to see. The pins in silver like the bolster and sheild. The brass pins look out of place on this one.

The brass pins and silver shield don't bother me as they are very traditional.
What looks out of place to me is the silver thong hole liner.
Traditionally those are brass on most patterns I have seen like this.

Are they available in any other colors of bone?
The ruby bone is boring to me. They have used it too much IMHO, (though I do realize it probably has it's fans).
I would like to see it in some browns and in some bone that changes in the color where it is hafted.
Amber bone and amber stag would look nice as well I think.

Ascetics of the colors not withstanding, it looks great! It looks like a good solid knife.
With GEC's usual standard for quality, it should be a winner!
I think I would like a smaller size for pocket carry though.

It could be the angle, but I have a 54 with a clip blade, and the clip on the 72 looks a bit different—particularly in GEC's release shot in the OP. Obviously the swedges on mine are different. But I mean the angle of the spine and the curve to the point look a lot more gradual on 72.

Maybe my 54 is the anomaly.

thats a prety knife smallmouth, what is the handle ?? and is that a 2 blade knife or 3 bladed stockman ? ive just looked at a few pics here on the forum, but never seen that i dont think ?

Nice Lockback too. Hope they add a variety of handle materials.

Definitely different shapes to the clip blades. Both of my GEC 54 knives have clip blades like yours. The clip on the 72 fits the Scout/Pioneer shaped handle of the lockback better.

Here's my Burnt Grizzly Cut Big Jack and Antique Horsecut Harness Jack for comparison.

The scales are primitive bone. It has two blades. It's probably my favorite GEC I own. Sorry, I didn't mean to derail this thread to the #54.

I got my #72 lockback last week. The shape of the clip blade is definitely different. The angles are much more gradual than the #54. It's an excellent knife. Unfortunately mine had a fit issue, so I sent it to GEC for repair. Hopefully I'll have it back sooner than later to take pics.

I got a lockback in Stonewashed Blue bone. This is a really nice knife. It's based on the #73 Sout pattern; it's slightly longer, but the handles are the same length, just the bolster is longer. The blades are the same length, but the clip point blade on the lockback is wider with a different profile.

I understand that not everybody likes lockbacks, but this is going to make a nice user/utility knife.

I'm new to this forum and also new to traditional pocket knives.
Although I'm not new to the knife world, I never payed too much attention to old style folders until I discovered GEC. After devouring the info I could find on the web, I ended up ordering a #72 Lockback with stonewashed blue handle slabs.
I'm thrilled that I found you guys and can't wait to know you better!

Hey shaman, welcome to the brotherhood.

I'm a huge GEC fan, I don't have one of their lockbacks yet, but I do have a few of their 73's and they are tough EDC's.

I will most certainly post pictures of the knife as soon as I get it, I placed the order two days ago.
Takes around 10 days to reach these parts of the world. But hey, it's worth it!

Congrats on your new lockback!

I love mine. The jigged bocote is a really nice handle material for a user, as I'm sure their bone is, too!


This guy summited Mt. Lafayette (and Mt. Lincoln and Little Haystack Mtn.) in New Hampshire with me on the 4th. One of my favorite EDCs.

Yeah, when I first saw it I thought it was smooth, but still a good pic.
I like the looks of this pattern, but I'm stuck on the 73's, Hows the luck up, or the walk & talk on these knives?

It doesn't snap quite like typical GECs, but it does have some walk & talk to it. The blade swings pretty freely, but it's solid once it's locked into place. It snaps closed once it gets to about 35-40 degrees, but I don't worry about cutting a finger off like I sometimes do with my 25. I think they got the action right for a lockback.

Now it's offered in stag and red stag.

Great looking knife HB--------I too,was ""talked into"" these three ----well,maybe I wuZZZZZZZZ--------I really kept waiting, till they came out with the Stags,then I just lucked up,and found the "'Burnt Orange Bone""_____1 of 3 _____with the "'Bomb Shield""----I made the Burnt Stag,an EDC,and you're right, about the ride in your pocket---hardly know it's there----thanks for sharin'____________Monk
