All About Pocket Knives

iam thinking about trying one of the gec stockmans, looking for the ones with bone handles, clip, spey ,sheepsfoot, ive seen some on the sites with more of a whittler thing going on, does anyone own a stockman, do they have realy hard snap, seems ive read the trappers are very strong springed, like to hear what ya think of em, or if there a EDC for you.

I don't think they have made a stockman.

If they have I want one too!

I know they make a stockman, I don't own one, but I held one at a show, and it had a great snap.

The backsprings are only bear traps on the 73, 23, and the small blade on some early 25's. I have not handled any 53 or 54 patterns that were nail busters.

Just as Knifeswapper has mentioned the #54 Pattern is easier to open then other GEC models...and as far as a more traditional Stockman model GEC released this one ..

yea thats like what id seen, i think in some differant colored bone though, are the handles realy wide on those knifes, it looks like they dont make any small knifes ?

They haven't made a Stockman, they have made something close to a Cattleman's or a Cigar and called it a Stockman.

You can call a duck a goose but that doesn't make it one.

I have to stray a little from Gary. Stockman is a very wide term, especially if you believe what Levine has to say in discussing about 50 variants. But there have been some discussions on the exact configuration of a "stockman". But as mentioned I don't think your question was intending to dig so deep; thus maybe a couple of pictures of what it appears you are looking for (added a couple of acrylics for color)....






They haven't made this pattern for a couple of years, but I expect it will coming back around this year.

My opinion only, but the 3 blade configuration is the only thing resembling a Stockman knife. The frame is not.

So..............could it be my duck is really a goose in a different frame?

When we vision a Stockman, the vision is most likely of the frame and not the numerous blade configurations possible within that frame.

I hope when they make a Trapper it's not in this cigar frame.

are the handles very wide ? looks like it night be a handfull mabe, posably close to a typical boy scout knife in thickness and measurement from top to bottom ?

I have seen others get all wrapped up in names. Almost like they do this to us just for the attention (no bad publicity). The Dead Skunk acrylic is not really made with dead skunk either

I don't know if anybody got upset with Frank Buster when he was making all these odd patterns. But at least he didn't try and make them all fit someone else's definition. (example: canittler). In this business if we grasp too tightly to strict guidelines, we first better decide where to get our guidelines from. We can't even get three pros to agree on "mint"....

The Mexican Bokote hardwood is becoming one of my favorite handle materials.

Not bone, but it's a GEC Stockman.
