Gentlemen, I am new to the forum and have been digesting the information available here. I have a Case XX USA stockman with a broken front pin. What is the best way to repair it? Can it be done without complete disassembly? Does anyone know the correct diameter pinstock. I need to order a supply for my new hobby. Thanks in advance for any help........ Dennis

The best way to repair it would be send it to one of our resident repairmen, but I see your wanting to learn.

Punch the pivot pin out and measure it, find a knife supply outlet (many online) and go for it!

No "dis-assembly" required; tools are!

I appreciate the welcome and input. However it appears punching the broken pin out would be problematic due to the fact that the halves don't seem to line up perfectly straight.

This guy can fix it for ya.

Welcome to AAPK.

The halves probably don't line up because the pin is broken.
It is hard to tell without seeing the knife, but I would probably drill the pin out.
Pin holes are usually tapered at the outside edge of the hole, so I usually find it easier to drill them out or cut all the pins and press them out from the inside so I am not working against the taper.

However, you might be able to flex the scales apart (note I said "flex", not bend-----take an aspirin, not the whole bottle) and wiggle in a narrow exacto blade. Then you might be able to work the pin out with the exacto blade.....kind of like breaking into your sister's room with a butter knife when you were a kid...lol

If you can get the pin out, replacement is a snap, but as Dale said, it will likely be tough to drive it out from the outside of the knife.

Guys, thanks for all the help. Does anyone know off the top of their heads the diameter of this nickel silver pin?

Your results may vary, but the few Case pivot pins I've replaced were all somewhere around 0.092".

Thank you, that would be 3/32". I will order a supply of that size. I thought that would be the size, but was unsure. Where do you guys order your pinstock from?........ Dennis

I got mine from a Gun & Knife show. You'll probably find it in American Wire Gage or Brown & Sharpe Wire Gage #11 (0.0907"). If you go with 3/32" you may find that a slight reduction in diameter is required.
I'm still new at this repair stuff, so someone more experienced may want to chime in.

I thought Case used fractional sizes, but I'm also new at this. Anyone else know for sure.... Dennis

send it back to Case they will fix it up for you just right...
